When is a consistent 4 loss team considered a national power? AU is more often average than a national power.

This thread would be two pages if the Auburn fans had "national power" reading comprehension.

Or if Georgia fans didn't come over and try to convince themselves they're somehow a national power and Auburn somehow is not

They are close. Do I put them up there with Bama, OSU, FSU, Clemson, Oklahoma? No. But they are definitely a level below.

Surely you are joking with this. This is a very bad look for you if you aren’t.

Clemson? I know Clemson has been good the past few years, but surely they aren't anywhere close to the level of Bama, Oklahoma, and Ohio State? Heck, I wouldn't put Florida State at that level either.

Auburn is way ahead of Clemson in terms of program prestige. They both have 2 National Titles. Auburn has 30 more wins all-time and a better winning percentage.... all while historically playing a much more difficult schedule.

In all-time AP Points, Auburn is tied for #12 nationally with 572 points. Clemson is only #20 with just 400 points. That's a gigantic gap. To put it into perspective, Clemson would have to finish on average 10 spots higher than Auburn in the final AP Poll each of the next 18 seasons to finally catch up.

Auburn also leads the all-time series against Clemson 33-15-2... with 50 meetings on the books, that's quite a lead in the series.

Florida State is one of the more difficult programs to rank (along with Miami). Those Florida schools were completely irrelevant until the early 1980s. Yet now here we are with Miami (5), Florida State (3), and Florida (3) all having multiple national titles all since 1983. You have to give them credit, however I believe there is something to be said for longevity and historical (pre 1980) relevance.

It also seems that all three major Florida programs have lost their magic aside from a handful of random seasons. From 1983-2001, Florida State (#1), Miami (#3), and Florida (#4) were all Top 4 programs in AP Points during the 19-year period.

And while Florida State (2013) and Florida (2006 & 2008) have won Championships, all three Florida schools have struggled a bit since about 2002.

Since 2002, Florida State ranks #13... Florida ranks #15... and Miami ranks #22 in AP Points over this most recent 16-year period. Obviously they've all fallen back a bit.

I think he is just talking within the last 4-5 years. All of those schools have at least one natty or multiple playoff berths

In that sense, sure... they've hung with the big boys the past few years. However, Clemson is fighting an uphill battle to overcome their less than stellar past. From the origin of the polling era up through 1980, Clemson ranked just #37 all-time in AP Poll points during the 45-year period. Since 1981, they've improved and won 2 National Titles.... yet have only been #16 in the AP since 1981. So they've really not blown the doors off aside from two great seasons.

They've climbed up to #20 all-time, but they've climbed about as far as they'll be able to go. It would take decades to get into the Top 15 all-time.

I agree with that but there's zero doubt that currently their program is on a level that Auburn isn't.

I don't know about that.

We have more talent right now than they do looking at the last 4 years of recruiting rankings.

If we had been in the playoffs instead of them last year, I would wager we would have done a whole lot better than them. They beat us in a close game at home in Stidham's first road game, but I would not have bet on them beating us again if we had met in the playoffs.

If we were playing them on a neutral field this year, I would guess it would be a toss up. Both teams are preseason top ten and the only reason Clemson is ranked a few spots higher is a MUCH easier schedule.

I would say Clemson is currently on AU's level, but historically well below AU.

Auburns name does not "resonate" like the blue bloods. In the south, maybe but folks out west or in the midwest don't talk Auburn.

Auburn is famous for Bo Jackson and Charles Barkley. If you listen to national football shows there is zero talk of Auburn. It is Ohio State, Bama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC and now maybe Georgia is getting some.

The program is viewed as an Arkansas, LSU, Mich State, Texas A&M. Good program, not a blueblood. Don't have the ability to be in the national picture EVERY year. Sure, they are gonna make some national noise every so often but so does Mich State and Okie State but not every year. They are a regional discussion. Not part of a discussion taking place in California or Ohio.

They've been in the playoffs 3 straight years, 2 title game appearances, one win. They are 50-6 in the CFP era.

Auburn has zero playoff appearances, zero conference titles in that same span. 33-20 in the CFP era.

Auburn is a full tier, maybe two full tiers below Clemson right now.
