Wrong. Brian Kelly won 297 games as a college head coach, & won back to back National Championships with Grand Valley State in 2002 & 2003.

Crazy Bo Schembechler never won one in all those years of coaching there.

Brian Kelly has two national championships.
FBS only here.
He also has well over 200 wins if we're counting everything.

What about Bobby Dodd, Johnny Vaught and Pat Dye? Do they not have 189 wins?

No.If they did, they'd be on this list. That's how this works.
Vaught's national title in 1960 is recognized by the compiler of this list.
Mark Richt has more wins than Dodd or Dye.

I count them as one of them was at the expense of my beloved Valdosta State Blazers.

Wonder if Richt Barnes makes the list for basketball.

Schembechler had a few chances but lost as heavy Rose Bowl favorites. In fact Bo was 2-8 in The Rose Bowl.

2000 Michael Vick team
1999 was the Michael Vick team that was so good. They lost to Florida State in the Natty that year. That Florida State team was absolutely loaded and Va. Tech gave them a decent game for awhile. FSU had Chris Weinke's old arse at QB and he won the Heisman. Peter Warrick was on that team also. Bobby Bowden had a ton of great players in his FSU tenure and should've won more than 2 Natty's, imo.
From 1987 until 2000 (14 years) Florida State finished ranked inside the AP Top 5 every year. That record will probably never be broken. During that streak, FSU was 152-19. Like I said, Bowden should've had more Natty's but he would always trip up against Miami or Florida every year it seemed.

Ironically Bowden got his first after 1 loss FSU got to play Nebraska over an undefeated major conference champion.

with a playoff, FSU would have a few more
There were at least 3 seasons (1987, 1992, 1997) where FSU lost 1 game by 3 points or less, and that was it...we were sealed out of the National Championship. Very small margin of error. Not one mulligan game against Miami

Who knows but Bowden did get to play in 5 title games and only won 2 of them.

West Virginia lost their bowl game that year to #8 Florida. The team who got kinda screwed was Notre Dame. They beat FSU the second to last week of the regular season but tripped up against Boston College the next weekend. They still beat #7 A&M in Cotton Bowl and finished #2 behind FSU who they beat H2H
FSU played a much more difficult schedule than WVU. FSU played the #2, #3, #5, #15, and #23 teams in the final AP Poll. They went 4-1 against those teams. WVU played the #5, #15, and #24 ranked teams in the final poll. FSU's only loss was to #2 Notre Dame on the road by 7. WVU's only loss was to #5 Florida, who Florida St beat on the road by 2 touchdowns.

Just like FSU lost their bowl game 63-3 in 2023.
