Coaches who lasted cause of 1 Player

Came across some discussion and facts on a Tennessee page. Butch Jones, in my opinion, is the worst coach in TN history. The only reason he made it 5 years at Tennessee was that he happened to stumble into a man named Josh Dobbs. Without Dobbs, Jones would be by far the worst coach in Vols history and would have lasted only 2 years. Here is the info from the TN page:
I remember feeling like Dobbs saved us some games, but I did not realize how much Dobbs bailed Jones out. Butch Jones should donate a percentage of his salary to Joshua Dobbs every year for the rest of his life.
Fuuck you Lyle "Butch" Jones

Nope, Jones was the worst. He literally went 4-8 in year 5, the worst year in the history of Tennessee athletics, possibly ever. At least Dooley and Pruitt never went 0-8 in conference. Jones got so lucky that he found lightning in a bottle with Josh Dobbs, because without Dobbs, Jones probably would have been fired in Year 2. Jones literally won 11 games over 5 years without Joshua Dobbs as his starting QB. That's a (.180) winning percentage without Dobbs. It gets worse. Without Dobbs, Jones only won 1 SEC game in 5 seasons. 13 of Jones's 14 SEC victories came with Josh Dobbs at QB. That means Jones's SEC winning percentage was (.042) without Dobbs under center.
Jones also had the worst home loss ever in TN football history in 2017 against UGA, 41-0. He also recruited Jarrett Guarantano to Tennessee and did not recruit Trevor Lawrence. Butch Jones made us a laughing stock and gave us the worst season and losses in TN history. There has never been a worse coach in TN history.

Brian Kelly gets canned much quicker without Jayden Daniels.
Matt McMahon doesn't even get the LSU job without Ja Morant.
Sumlin at A&M owes a lot to Johnny Football.

All are true, but I don't think y'all understand what that stat says. Butch Jones won 1 SEC game without Josh Dobbs while being the HC for 5 years.
1 SEC game...

How many games did Dobbs cost him?

Dan Mullen probably gets fired from Florida a year or two earlier if Franks doesn’t get hurt against Kentucky and Kyle Trask doesn’t see the field

Dobbs was far from a perfect QB. However, looking at what he was working with as a coach, the fact that he won any game is insane. Given that Butch averaged 2.4 wins a year without Dobbs yet was the coach for 5 years, I think it's safe to say Dobbs extended Butch's career at TN by at least 3 years.

At least Cutcliffe went 8-4 one year without Eli

Wouldn’t Coach O be the ultimate winner of this?

Houston Nutt at Arkansas had 2 players back to back that saved his arse...
First Matt Jones, then Darren McFadden

Dexter McCluster was the only reason we won some games in 2009. Nutt survived, but he had a lot of goodwill going into the 2010 season because of how the 2009 season finished.
Hootie Nutt wasn't giving him the ball at the beginning of the season. He figured out what he had in the middle of the season, and it ended up saving our season.
Here are the stats to prove it.
First six games (4-2 with wins over Memphis, Southeastern Louisiana, Vanderbilt, and UAB)- 38 carries for McCluster
Last seven games (4-2 with wins over Arkansas, Tennessee, LSU, and Oklahoma State)- 143 carries for McCluster

Cutcliffe had some success at Duke without Manning and was 8-4 the year before Manning at Ole Miss.
Worth mentioning, but nothing like a Cam/Chizik situation.

Burrow was incredible, but he had a bunch of other absolute studs on the team.
I don't think we can say he lasted just because of Burrow.

I doubt it - he was fired late year 4. If he didn't get JD, LSU would still probably be decent in 2022 and 2023. LSU went 9-4 in 2024 with Nuss, and coming back as a senior in 2025, the timeline probably does not shift much if at all.
