Hallman rode Brett Favre to the LSU job

Cutcliffe had some success at Duke without Manning and was 8-4 the year before Manning at Ole Miss.
The entire reason Cutcliffe was hired was to secure Eli manning. The year after manning left the program fell apart and the talent on the roster looked like a team coming out of probation and he was fired.

Then why riot?
From an outsiders perspective, it certainly felt like momentum and Kiffin was going to turn it around. I wonder how much the comments like you gave are leftover copium.

lol you really grasp at straws
Guess what, Butch Jones had a FEI of #7 one year at Tennessee, and no one wants him back lol
Well yeah, the following year he dropped to #23 and then #81 in his final season. No one rioted when Butch Jones left because the program was declining.

How many games did Dobbs cost him?
As a Starter, Dobbs was 12 - 9. Of those 9 losses, Tennessee's defense gave up an average of 29.4 points per game. Their offense finished 11th, 10th, 3rd and 2nd. Dobbs' Junior and Senior Seasons, Tennessee averaged scoring over 35 points per game and he was 5th and 3rd in the conference in passing yards. His Senior season, he led the SEC in passing touchdowns and passer rating. His Junior season, he was 14th in the league in rushing yards and 7th in rushing touchdowns. His Senior season, he was 17th in the conference in rushing yards and 7th in rushing touchdowns. During Dobbs' Senior Season, Tennessee had wins over Kentucky (who scored 36 points), Missouri (who scored 37 points) and Georgia (by a miracle last second throw by Dobbs into the endzone).
The season after Dobbs left, Jones led Tennessee to the only 8-loss season in the history of the program. Jones only got credit for 6 of the losses, because he was fired before the last 2 games.
Only 2 coaches have led Tennessee to winless seasons in conference:
1924 - Mark Banks led Tennessee to an 0-4 record in the Southern Conference
2017 - Butch Jones led Tennessee to an 0-8 record in the SEC.
Josh Dobbs is the only reason Butch Jones isn't the obvious choice as the worst coach in the history of Tennessee football.

It's obvious why people rioted. The season ended with the NCAA opening an investigation into the program, then we lost our bowl game by 3 TDs, then he left a week later, he left without a press conference or anything, and told all the recruits to follow him. No shite, people were mad at how the season ended, especially after he named his son after the town. Any fanbase would be angry at how that all went down.

Doesn't seem to be true, multiple references to a press conference when I Googled it.
Most of the quotes from that time speak of being "hurt" and "disappointed". Your comments are revisionist history.

No national title, no conference title, no division title...what did Johnny do for Sumlin? Barely beat Duke in the chicken bowl?
Manziel gave Sumlin a MUCH, MUCH longer leash and an instant raise and extension after winning the Heisman. I doubt any of that happens if it weren't for Manziel.

Looking at First Year
2021 Heupel: #18
2009 Kiffin: #20
FYI, looking at FEIs, Heupel's highest ranking is higher than any Kiffin team ever lol

They beat Alabama. Wins like that are the peak of Aggie football success, if we're all being honest.
Them remembering that game is like some of us remembering natties or conference championships.

Exactly. No one riots when a bad coach leaves and the program is worse off.

And y'all would have thrown a fit if Heupel left at the end of 2021 too.

Go watch it:
Reporter: "Hey Lane out of respect for the fans will you answer 3 questions for us?"
Kiffin: Walks out the room

Yes, TN fans were "hurt" and "disappointed" that he left without any answers for us except to enjoy the NCAA investigation.
Why is that so crazy?

We would have thrown a fit if Dooley, Jones, Pruitt, or Heupel left after one year without addressing the fanbase and leaving us with an NCAA investigation. What are you not understanding

Someone doesn't have to take questions at a press conference necessarily. You said there was no press conference when there literally was.

Why do you blame Lane and O, in totality for this NCAA investigation? A perusal of news stories from that time indicate that your basketball and baseball programs were also under investigation, with basketball having committed violations as well. The football violations appear to be relatively minor.
Seems more like a systemic Tennessee athletic department problem.

Kiffin read a 15-second statement and walked out. That's a reading or prepared statement, not a press conference.

When this story broke, it was all about football, and within a month, Kiffin left. That is when people were "rioting."

The other stuff came out later, and you are using hindsight to talk about the events. It was not until 2011 that we learned what was happening or consequences. At the time, no one knew anything except that Kiffin had left us with football violations and that we could be in trouble, with no answers or HC. I don't understand why it is so hard for you people to understand this

Wouldn’t Coach O be the ultimate winner of this?
Burrow was incredible, but he had a bunch of other absolute studs on the team.
I don't think we can say he lasted just because of Burrow.
O also had Burrow, CEH, justin jefferson, and jamar chase in 2018 and lost 3 games. Point being...their 2019 season wasn't JUST BECAUSE they had those guys on the roster...they were already on the roster and didn't go undefeated.
As it relates to the topic at hand, it's just futher proof, as you said, that nobody will ever surpass gene chizik when it comes to this quesiton. He was an absolutely utter failure of a coach before AU, had an undefeated season with cam, and was largely a mega turd in his non-Cam AU years. I mean the guy's entire career is just "I had cam one year".

How he didn't win an SEC title with McFadden is beyond logic.

Side note: I miss those game day polos. I had two UGA ones that I loved
