Personally this is very bad news for College sports. If you think the gap is wide between the Bamas and the Hawgs of the NCAA wait until we can legit pay out in the open.

The California Assembly has passed legislation to let college athletes make money, setting up a confrontation with the NCAA that could jeopardize the athletic futures of programs at USC, UCLA and Stanford.
The bill would let college athletes hire agents and be paid for the use of their name, image or likeness. And it would stop universities and the NCAA from banning athletes who take the money.
The Assembly passed the bill 66-0 on Monday, a few days after the bill got an endorsement from NBA superstar Lebron James, who did not go to college.
Universities oppose the bill, and the NCAA has warned the bill could mean California universities would be ineligible for national championships.
The California Senate must take a final vote on the bill by Friday.

It's either the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning.

So no change?

The NCAA has already said that those schools would be barred from competing for championships. Let the Cali. schools do whatever they want.

California is going to California...just let them screw up college football for themselves, they've already fricked up every thing else in their state.

In a practical sense, they already are.

All the Ncaa has to do is ban schools from post season play that pay their players.

The California Assembly has zero jurisdiction over the NCAA. If the NCAA declares ineligible or expels athletes or member institutions that refuse to abide by its rules, the state of California can't do anything about it.

What happens when the NCAA has no member schools left to plunder?
Having said that, frick CA.

Maybe California can start its own league and expand it with illegal aliens.

Gotta imagine there will be capped stipends and flat fee for using their likeness.
No jersey royalties based on sales because the blue bloods sell more jerseys and that gives them a distinct advantage.

The rest of the country doesn't always go the way of California. In fact, what likely will happen will be mostly nothing...if players know they'll lose their eligibility, they likely will continue to comply with the rules.

Thanks to the federal government that keeps bailing it out.

But what are the other schools gonna do when all the top athletes flock to the Cali colleges because they can get paid like a mofo there? You give these kids a choice between a Dodge Charger and a national championship or $500,000 and tell me which they are going to choose.
