I feel like not enough focus has been placed on OU shitting the bed against Michigan. That was an absolute disaster of an offensive performance.
Are we sure Venables is a good coach? Let's take a look at his record vs ranked opponents (final ranking used for completed seasons; current record used for current season)

Overall Venables is 5-16 against ranked opponents since arriving in Norman.
He's just 2-10 against Top 15 opponents.... one of which was a fluky game against Bama where they were outgained in total yardage 406-212... the other came against a Top 5 Texas team in 2023 in which the Longhorns also outgained OU in total yards and lost due to a -3 Turnover Margin.
It seems like Venables should be taking more heat for the state of this program than he does. Why is he not on the hot seat?

If OU has another bad loss to Texas, that will be 3 humiliating losses (and 4 out of the last 5) to the Longhorns in a row. The QB Peter Gardere beat OU four times in a row in the early 90s, but those were really close games.
What Venables is doing is without precedent. If a 2-2 OU team gets desatroyed again by Texas, I am convinced he is fired the next day, regardless of the buyout.

OU plays New America next week who has scored 108 points and only given up 14. I think New America won 10 games last year there's a real chance OU could lose this game.

Maybe everyone is right he was really responsible for the success at Clemson… but good and the bad… ie -Clempsoning

He needs a better OC, then he needs to stay out of his way. I think he's another example of a head coach that needs to step away and be the program manager.

My prediction last year was that Oklahoma under Venables would become the new old Auburn, where every once in a while they'd come up with a really good season that seemed to come out of nowhere, and then the next few seasons they'd go right back to pissing off their fans and having lost seasons.

Interesting trivia question is "who was the last program to win a national championship whose head coach also was a play caller?"
Ryan Day finally broke through when he handed it of. Saban was the goat, and he obviously didn't think calling plays was the thing to do.

He is an excellent Defensive Coach...now Head Coach is a different story. It think its fair to say that he still has to prove he can be a good Head Coach. But he is 100% a Good Defensive Coach.

Idk the story from the past weekend is still Texas for Good reason but OU definitely deserves criticism. Mateer didn't play well, I look forward to seeing how he responds. Cause that was a pretty bad performance given all the talk this offseason about his progression.

He does just enough and he recruits well. Puts the shot-callers in a tough spot. Enough games like Saturday and there could be a push, though.

That’s actually a fair assessment. I think most of us OU fans feel that way. I’m at the point where having BV as HC feels forced. Just doesn’t feel natural to me anymore. He’s best at being DC, that’s it.

I'm not sure what the state of their collective is now, but in his first season they had one of the better NIL operations in the country. They had a bad team, going 6-7, but they bought a bunch of recruits in the 2023 class that they really had no business getting given their on-field performance. Funny enough, a bunch of those players have been busts or underperformed.

I asked Chat GPT before the year why on earth OU's Vegas win total was only 7.5 when most writers were picking them to possibly win the title. I've never seen a title pick have a win total that low
It gave me a breakdown on why Vegas thinks they'll take a step back from last year. Said they had one of the best plus turnover margins, the nations best kicker that missed 2 kicks, and was 5-0 in one possession games.
The schedule started preseason was 1 overall SOS but finished 9th in the SEC.
Said basically every break went their way and that doesn't translate year over year. Its like leading MLB in one run wins and expecting the same next year.
I still think they go 10-2/9-3 and will be a fringe playoff team. Michigan and Ok State fans said all of these same things last Monday. I think they split UGA and Texas.

Last month I asked OU fans what would happen between Venebles and Nagy if things went off the rails. Who fires who, etc.? I was told that Oklahoma's Coach & GM model is the wave of the future. I doubt that, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this all plays out in that organization.
