Is it technically a "snub" or "overlooked" if a player doesn't meet the clear criteria?

You can definitely say the criteria could use adjustments but none of these players are eligible.

Cam Newton and Tyrann Mathieu absolutely meet the quantitative minimum requirements - 1st team all-American, 10 years removed from college football, have played in the last 50 years. They check all those boxes.

The much more subjective “citizen record” seems to be what is tripping them up.

quote:

Citizen Record: The player's post-football record and achievements as a citizen are also evaluated by the Honors Court

So yes, I would consider those two to have been snubbed by the Honors Court of the college football hof.

I can hate LSU and Auburn with the best of them. But I also realize that Newton and Mathieu were two of the best of their era. And keeping them out over very subjective measures is exactly what a snub is.

Yeah, just like Les Miles, he should've retired instead of killing trivia pieces like their win percentage. However, they made exceptions for Leach, so obviously, the winning percentage portion is flexible.

They could completely eliminate the winning percentage requirement and Les Miles likely wouldn’t make it because of all the sexual harassment baggage he carries.

quote:

The 2013 LSU Investigation

The Allegations: Female student workers accused Miles of texting them, calling them, meeting them off-campus alone, and making suggestive remarks or unwanted advances, including kissing at least one student. Staff also claimed Miles preferred certain physical types for student workers assisting with recruiting.

The Findings: An internal review by the Taylor Porter law firm concluded Miles exhibited poor judgment and inappropriate behavior, though investigators stated they could not fully substantiate or disprove every claim (such as what occurred inside his vehicle) and found no statutory legal violation.

The Discipline: Then-Athletic Director Joe Alleva recommended firing Miles for insubordination, but LSU instead issued a reprimand, banned Miles from being alone with female student workers or hiring them as babysitters, and ordered him to undergo legal/behavioral counseling. The findings were kept confidential for eight years

Didn't know that. Also surprised he wasn't.

The AA requirement is dumb, but I think without it the voters might make Julio continue to wait anyway. If you just look at his numbers they don’t exactly blow you away. I of course understand how good he was and the impact he had on games, and I would hope the voters would remember the crap QBs who he played with, the meh supporting WRs cast, and of course the different philosophy Bama’s offense had then.

Cap'n, how does one get "fairly" snubbed? Seems to be an oxymoron to me.

You seem to be dodging anything about the Leach and Majors dynamic.
quote:

- 1 Unanimous Natty as a HC
- 1 Natty as an assistant coach
- 2 NFL and CFB hof coached
- 3 SEC titles (6th most all time)
- 100 wins at an SEC school
- 17 First round draft picks
- took 3 different power conference programs to multiple bowl games
- coaching tree of: Fulmer, Cignetti, and Gruden
- National Coach of the Year
- Big 8 Coach of the Year
- SEC Coach of the Year

Yes, without a doubt, Majors had a lot bigger impact on football than most coaches in the Hall of Fame. If Leach is getting into the hof because of impact then no reason Majors shouldn't be either

Majors is in the hof at Iowa State, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee. If you are in the hall of fame at 3 different power conference programs, then you need to be in the College Football Hall of Fame.

That is a hall-of-fame resume. It just is

This feels like a post apropos for the SEC Rant - lots of trolling but irrelevant to the topic. If winning a championship is a prerequisite for college football hall of fame, plenty of great players would not be eligible.

That is sort of what any hall of fame is based on - career achievement.

If the requirement is to have won a national championship then they will have to kick out the majority of the 1,129 players currently in the college hof.

Should David Greene be in the CFB HOF? He at least won an SEC Championship.

drug issues and his dismissal from LSU are why he has not made it.

I don't think so.

You are also ineligible for the ballot so long as active in the NFL.

The following years ballots are not published until June of the preceding year.

He retired in July 2025 when the ballot for 2026 was set. The paperwork and nomination process is lengthy and starts with the school. According to Google, LSU has not submitted his packet to the National Football Foundation. Each packet also has to pass District screening and the ballot is limited to 80 names.

He likely makes it on the ballot in 2027.

Similarly, Cam was elgible in 2021 but the first packet was submitted for the 2026 ballot from Au.

Both will make it, but it is also not uncommon to sit on the ballot a couple of cycles. Cam is interesting given his historic year, but I wonder if having only one real season of meaningful FBS college football has an effect more than anything else.

Bottom line: school's start the process. They may want to stagger entries or prioritize others or maybe they're just bad at paperwork and deadlines. Also, the 80 player cap on the ballot is big when managing 100s of former all Americans and major award winners waiting in line.

When a person’s behavior and actions lead to them being blackballed, ostracized or banned. Examples would be being found guilty of ongoing sexual harassment/rape, committing serious crimes, gambling on sports - especially on your own games, fixing or throwing games, things such as that would be examples of being fairly snubbed. When a person’s own bad behavior results in them getting blackballed or banned they earned that fair and square. Some would say it is a case of actions having consequences. Some would say it is a case of FAFO.

Is the title of your thread not "Biggest College Football Hall of Fame Snubs?" By that logic, anyone mentioned gets your exact same response as above. Why even start this thread if that's your only response to pointing out a flawed process of someone who should be in it?

If Mike Leach gets in the hall of fame then Johnny Majors absolutely should too

No. And he doesn’t meet the minimum requirements to even be considered.

If national championships are the main criteria, would you agree Michael Williams of Alabama should be in the college football HOF? He won three national championships at Alabama. I have included his statistics for reference. I think it would be ridiculous to suggest he be in the hall of fame. But people keep bringing up how important championships are. In that case they need to let Michael Williams into the college HOF, and they need to pull Dan Marino out of the NFL HOF.

I have argued that Cam Newton and Tyrann Mathieu - two players who tormented Alabama - should be in. So clearly I have not had the same response. There are some people who should be in but - for whatever reasons - are not. There are a LOT of people who are not in and should not be.

Johnny Majors is one of these. I am not saying he was a horrible coach. I am only saying he is not a hall of fame caliber coach.

Based on his record, Johnny Majors does not meet requirements for the college football HOF nor does he deserve to be there. Going 12-0 and winning a national championship does not erase the other 28 seasons he coached, 12 of which he failed to even have a winning record.

His winning percentage at all three schools is lower than each schools all time winning percentage.

ISU has an all-time winning percentage of .455; Johnny Majors was .444 there.

Tennessee has an all-time winning percentage of .670; Johnny Majors was .652 there.

Pitt has a has an all-time winning percentage of .573, Johnny Majors was .500 there.

His winning percentage was below average at every school he coached at. One 12-0 season does not forgive that.

Since they already set the precedent for Mike Leach they should change the 10 year rule for coaches. Currently Pete Carroll isn't eligible.

Cam Newton was on the ballot this year in his first year of eligibility but got snubbed. Instead, Mark Ingram and Garrison Hearst were elected in. Both guys are deserving of the HoF. I'm biased but I think Cam should've been a first ballot HoF'er. He will get in next year I believe.

I agree that Cam should be in. He is the perfect example of what this thread was about. I think this sums up how many Bama fans feel about Cam Newton.

For the millionth time, no one is questioning Majors winning percentage.

The hof has adjusted the winning percentage requirements to allow Mike Leach to get in the hof because they said despite his winning percentage, his impact to football is worthy of the hof

If Mike Leach is getting into the hof because of impact than so should Johnny Majors

His impact was massive to 3 programs and his accolades are very substantial relative to other inductees

And despite all those winning percentages you took the time to write out, each one of those programs put Majors in their hof, so they obviously still see the value he brought
