To me this is a bad hire from Saban.

O'Brien was fine from a coaching standpoint. His problem was/is his ego and he had to be the worst GM ever to grace that title in the NFL.

Don't get carried away about the worst GM......that line goes all the way around the corner already.

Scott Linehan wasn't bad. He just wasn't young. As he was hired to work with Steve Ensminger for his final season at LSU.

Sure the offense was different in 2020 relative to 2019, but that was due to brand new players and not enough time to install the 2019 offense due to Covid.

Nonetheless, after the first three games of the season, the offense was actually ahead of he 2019 pace, but no one knew it because the defense was so freaking bad. Of course, the pace significantly slowed down under true freshmen TJ Finley, but that wasn't Linehan or Ensminger's fault.

Oh yeah, because of Covid, there was also no time for the 10,000 catches in the offseason either.

Nonetheless, nobody knows what kind of job O'Brien will do as OC for Alabama, but O'Brien is not my biggest concern. My biggest concern for Alabama is what will happen if Bryce Young gets hurt. Which is highly likely given his tiny size.

As behind Bryce Young, their is a very big drop off in QB talent.

Well, he managed to keep Deep Space Nine running during two wars and several terrorist attacks, so I think we're in good hands.

Fine is probably a good way to put it.

Not great at Penn State, although he followed Paterno and was hampered by the sanctions from the scandal.

Not fantastic with the Texans, although they did win their division for four of his six-plus years there.

He does have some interesting names on his coaching tree though, most notably Belichick, which I'm sure is what helped him get his foot in the door with Saban.

Saban always has a method to the madness
It was to coach up Bryce Young who is very similar to Deshaun Watson

To me this is a bad hire from Saban. I know everything seems to work out on Sabans teams in the long run, but come on this guy hasn’t been in the college game since 2013. He coached in the big ten in 2013 where the offenses were a lot different than today. The guy also had minimal success in the NFL as the Texans ahead coach and rode Brady and Gronk to the super bowl in New England. If I were Tide fans I would be a little nervous because this smells a lot like our Scott Linehan hire.

Curious to know what your real response was to the Kiffin hire or the Sark hire. I’m sure you thought they were both great hires at the time. Lol!

Yes…a little. He has a pro coach pedigree and a dual threat QB. Plus a goodly portion of the offense is new. Something has to give. I would like to know who the offense analysts are.

It will probably be ok until we have to out-score someone. I’m most worried about Ole Miss (Kiffin factor), Georgia (in SEC), and Texas A&M.

You do mean the Bill O'Brien that won the Paul "Bear" Bryant COY award? The OC for Penn State and New England?

It may be a long line but BoB resume leads the candidacy of recent memory by far.

Everyone said Sark was going to be a flop when he was hired out of the NFL ranks too.

BOB got fired due to being a bad GM not a bad coach.

Sark was the OC on a successful college team. Completely different scenario. Closest comparison is Dabol.

That didn’t stop these threads from being made 2 years ago. Or when Kiffin was hired in 2014.

At this point Saban is just trying to make it interesting on himself...probably would have hired Miles as OC if not for....things

For what it's worth, Brady's only 5,000-yard passing season was when O'Brien was his offensive coordinator.

It's Saban's program. Doesn't seem to matter who the coaches are. I wouldn't be worried in the least. They might actually use some of those star RB's a little more now.
Hell, Tide fans aren't worried about who Saban hires. Some may want a favorite of their own hired, but we don't worry about his decisions...one would be a fool to second guess the man about ANYTHING regarding football.
Are our opponents worried?

Bill O’Brien turned Hackenburg into an NFL prospect at Penn State. He was a successful positional coach and OC with Pats before going to Penn State. He was a modestly successful NFL head coach.

That is nothing like Daboll who was a middling pro positional coach and coordinator before going to Alabama.
