funny because that article is quite different than the big 6 referred to around here.

quote:

The question now is, have those six programs built a fence around the nation's hotbeds? Or can Auburn, Arkansas and Tennessee find coaches who can break through?

i was under the impression that tenner and aubs were a part of the big 6- no?

I just don't get it. If I were a Bama fan, I'd brag about being the Big 1 while laughing at the little 13.

Bragging about what other teams do...guess I'll never understand it.

While Bama is for sure the clear cut #1... its impossible to ignore the fact that there is a "Next 5" of whom one more often than not wins the SEC ahead of Alabama.

Since Bear Bryant came to Alabama (1957), there have been 72 SEC football championship trophies presented to teams. Alabama has 20 of those 72. The next closest teams (Georgia & LSU) each have 9.

So while Alabama has more than double any other single team, on average one of those other teams wins it over Alabama 4 out of every 5 years.

Yes you can clearly state that Alabama is #1. But you also have to acknowledge that the "Next 5" are more than just relevant when it comes to winning SEC Championships. One of those other 5 wins it about 80% of the time.

I didn't think you'd read it. I gave it a shot.

No one actually refers to the big 6 other than this board, not that I've seen at least.

How has LSU been able to play such an insanely easy schedule? Since 1933, Auburn has literally played an extra 100 games against other "Big6 + Georgia Tech" teams compared to LSU.

LSU had two perennial doormats on the schedule from 1893 to the 1990's in Florida and Ole Miss.

If you notice, neither Bama, UT, Auburn or Georgia played Ole Miss yearly until the 92 expansion and only Auburn and Georgia played Florida yearly. Auburn played UT, Bama and UGA every year which bumps them up a lot. We take a hit for State and Vandy but playing AU and UT every year puts it back up there.

I don't think you need an article. The facts speak for themselves.

SEC Championships since 1964:

19- Alabama
8- Georgia
8- Florida
7- Auburn
7- Tennessee
7- LSU

1- Everyone else (and that one was claimed way back in 1976)

Doesn't take a rocket scientist, nor a media article, to clearly see there is a clear separation between the Top 6 teams in the conference and everyone else.

It's called geography. Teams in days gone by quite often played teams that were closest to them - LSU has played over 100 games against teams that were in the SWC (A&M, Rice, Texas, Arkansas, etc) because for pretty much a century we sat on the western border of the SEC.

So if by "easy schedule" you mean teams not in the Big Six, you're right. If by "easy schedule" you mean "teams that completely suck LOL LSU" you're simply wrong.

This may sounds like an excuse but Auburn has definitely played the hardest schedules of all SEC teams.

They definitely have. Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee were their main rivals that they played every year from 1950 or so through 1991, and 3 of the 4 of those were the top 3/4 schools in the league.

I'll bite. Why? I mean, I know you play Alabama and UGA every year, but so does Tennessee.

Don't get me wrong, I am thinking there is a good reason to say what you said, but I am wondering why Auburn has played a tougher schedule.

Just saw SummerofGeorge's response. Thanks!

Don't bite. That's every Auburn fan's preamble to claiming Auburn is a far better program than they actually are.

LSU didn't start playing Florida every year until the 1970's.

Ole Miss under John Vaught was elite. Granted, they sucked for the other 100 years but for those two decades they whooped some arse.

So, you are claiming the 20 years that you played Florida and they were bad does not count.

Now you are claiming the 20 years Ole Miss was good does count?

Nobody is atching on to what Bama has done. ONly they can take credit for what they have accomplished. But they make a good argument when you look who has won all the SRC Championships in the last however many years they are picking.

I don't personally single any programs out....Big 1 or Big 6. We are all the SEC.
