My son is graduating this spring from Bama. So very proud of him and the school.. the whole university experience has been nothing but excellent. I'd highly recommend.

See you at Graduation, (but I am staying in Birmingham because I am not paying 1200 for a days inn)

But will pay that for a great post graduation steak dinner.

I came so close to going to Bama, like really close. Thankfully, LSU came in with a last-minute offer that I couldn't say no to. I never looked back, and it was the correct decision.

The success that Auburn and Alabama have achieved in all areas while both being from the same state is quite amazing.

We’re currently #1 and #2 in basketball.

The only state with a second best team football history rated as high is Florida (4x the population). Not Michigan. Not Ohio. Not Georgia. Not even California. All substantially larger.

Academically, we’re both better than the top state school in Louisiana, Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi, etc.

Again, Alabama is middle of the pack in terms of population but has two state schools that punch far above their weight in almost every area.

It's really the best of both worlds. Not only does he get a great education but he learns how to be a gracious loser. Both will serve him well.

Looks likes my son, who I had to drag out of bed every morning kicking and screaming to get to high school almost every morning, is going to not only graduate with honors from Bama but just got into graduate school and will be getting a Master’s degree. As a much as I'd like to shite on this as a Tennessee fan...I just can't do it. Congratulations to your son in finding a school where he not only gets through...but rather where he thrives. I guess my role as a parent of college students trumps my role as a fan.

TutHill Tiger-Good for your son and you! I sent three daughters to Bama, all had scholarships (two with full ride presidentials). All were Tri Delts and graduated on time with honors (marketing, finance and interior design. They came home with husbands and have produced seven grandchildren. I couldn't be happier with their Bama experience.

Neither Ole Miss or Bama are "Good" schools academically by and large. Both are hovering around #100 in public school US rankings behind many schools that are not even state schools.

Had many friends attend Ole Miss, they let almost everyone in and academics are hardly focused.

STEM schools apparently pride themselves on being pricks, I don’t know what LSUs problem is.

Every university has and always has had science, technology, engineering, and math departments. It’s funny when parents buy into this marketing thinking undergrad depts are different from any other university

Yet Bama is a good school. All diplomas are watered down now. Yours is not special.

I can also tell you from personal experience that Auburn, Texas and unfortunately LSU generally couldn’t care less

I can probably explain why you feel that way about Texas, but it's not true. Once you are admitted to Texas, they will work with you and your personal life/struggles.

Key words - once you are admitted

Broad-brush rankings of institutions as large as most in the SEC are not terribly informative. Each university has both very strong schools as well as average schools within them. Alabama may have overall fewer elite programs than Texas, but no employer with half a brain would turn their nose up at a graduate of Bama's accounting, law, or engineering schools.

Look kudos to anyone looking into higher education and the OP has a wonderful post.

However, just like I dont pretend Texas has the history or is the football program that Bama is, dont pretend that Bama is a "great" academic school at large.

There are likely certain programs that are higher rates but by and large your University is NOT Great, Good, or even Average as compared to other public universities in the US.

I agree each school has certain schools within it that are much higher ranked than others.

Bama Engineering is below average but Law is good.

I am just saying undergrad by and large at Bama is below average and every publication, stat, and ranking displays that. Its ok and not Bama grads faults necessarily it just is what it is.
