Modern college has become “Club Med with Classes.” The amenities are out of control. I don’t think the costs are sustainable. $30,000 a year for in state?

You can't rent an apartment for cheaper than on-campus housing.

However, just like I dont pretend Texas has the history or is the football program that Bama is, dont pretend that Bama is a "great" academic school at large.

There are likely certain programs that are higher rates but by and large your University is NOT Great, Good, or even Average as compared to other public universities in the US.

And..... this is the reason most people despise the university of Texas. I lived in Austin for 29 years and owned a company that provided IT services to mostly accounting and law firms along with 3 colleges on the UT campus itself. Worked with many Longhorns and most were great people. BUT there was a sizable element with this attitude. Talking academic shite such as this while armed only with a Bachelors or less. Fortunately, few of these types were serious decision makers or impact players.

I can confirm the cheating is rampant. My daughter just graduated this past December and she admits, she and all of her friends cheated to get through. To say I was pissed, was an understatement. It happens at all schools, but I have first hand knowledge of Ole Miss. Mist of her classes were online. My son is at State and he has 100% in class. He’s also an engineering student.

Yeah for 1/10th of the experience. 1 year in a dorm is hours and hours of comical stories and tales of conquest later in life. Everyone should live on campus for a year. Apt living was a bore but a lot more academically productive.

Broad-brush rankings of institutions as large as most in the SEC are not terribly informative. Each university has both very strong schools as well as average schools within them. Alabama may have overall fewer elite programs than Texas, but no employer with half a brain would turn their nose up at a graduate of Bama's accounting, law, or engineering schools.

Mostly true. Schools often have departments that outrank their overall university ranking. But Alabama law likely won't get you interviews with top firms. Those go to Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Harvard and Yale grads.

Again, his advisor went way above and beyond anything I could have ever hoped for in this situation.

Thanks for sharing your story. I know how proud you must be of your son and rightly so!

I honestly don't know anyone who holds degrees from Texas to such a high regard the way these people do, and as an auditor of government and commercial entities I deal almost exclusively with people who hire professionals. Have never heard anyone say "he went to Texas so you know he must know his stuff." These dudes are acting like it's Harvard or something.

Utter administrative incompetence.

I graduated in '90. I wouldn't send my kid to LSU today.

actually the opposite now. Tate has done a great job, just had to undo 2 decades of incompetence....really since Emmert left.

Sorry to piss in your Cherrios.

This has to be an aggy troll and a damn good one. No real UT grad is this tone deaf or stupid. Yes, many are arrogant but this is a whole other level

It’s a lot about fit. My oldest graduated from Auburn. My youngest, well it wasn’t the right fit.

Again want to deal in facts? Bama is not a great or good academic university. By what metric, ranking, system, etc can you point me to that dictates otherwise?

Doesn't make me arrogant or a dick its just a fact. Already said congrats to the OP and awesome for him and his family.

However, give me one shred of evidence that discredits what I stated.

I don’t see how anybody going to a huge school can talk academic smack There are like 10 schools in the world that I’d be impressed with off the bat but than maybe not so much after actually talking to a graduate getting accepted is the most impressive thing

I agree with that.

That job has only just begun. It's the entire administration of the university. I'm not even talking about educators, I'm talking about the bureaucrats below Tate. I know several people who work at LSU in different capacities. That school is broken. After what I've heard, I don't even donate to the Foundation any more. I'd rather give my money to Tech or UL. They just have better run institutions that don't waste so much.

100% agree

outside of top admin LSU is one of the most poorly run schools in the state. Getting better everyday though, but has a decade of work ahead just to get the school back to where it was under Emmert 2 decades ago

everything is screwed up, from the social media presence outside of sports, to the Greek life, to admissions to scholarships to priorities....its a long road to hoe for sure. Good news it is getting better for sure.

yall are so naive...cheating is rampant at every school due to advances in technology...get over it

im an engineer and guess what...at no time have I ever been required to memorize ways to do things without being allowed books and online resources to help...yet in college i was and for the testing i was...its dumb

instead we should be teaching kids how to use the resources available and be smart with time.

I sure hope so. Academically, that school has dropped like a stone right out of the rankings. When I graduated in 90, my program was ranked #12 in the country. Now it's not even on the radar.

I believe LSU is last or next to last in the conference for academic endowments. State has a larger endowment than LSU. LSU will remain a backwater until they can get their endowment up. The larger the endowment, the less money has to come from the State General Fund. The less money from the general fund, the less political interference in the running of the university.

Congratulations to all of you fine parents who find hard work and commitment pays off for your kids. Undergraduate, graduate degrees, etc. For those of you who have a fragile ego and need to put others down (or their universities) in order to feel better about yourself... I feel sad for you. I was a naive 18 year old and applied to two schools, SMU and Alabama. I chose Alabama because my dad went there.. from there a masters and doctorate at Kansas. My oldest graduated from Alabama and received her doctorate from Kansas as well. My youngest went to a difficult liberal arts college and now has a master's degree. No where in my mind do I consider any of these institutions significantly different from the others. I agree with the comment of you get out of an education what you put into it. Lastly, in all my jobs over the many years, no employer has questioned me regarding the institution that I graduated from. Finally, I would be so proud to be anyone of you parents who find happiness and success in your children. For those of you who come in here to put down others says alot about who you are as a person.
