Will the Aggie Bonfire ever return as a sanctioned university event?
There’s been a lot of push from state government leaders in recent years to bring back this storied Texas rivalry with huge student support from both schools.

When will the rivalry return? When and if the rivalry returns, will A&M sanction the bonfire as part of the rivalry?

Now, with the dominance of social media, couldn’t the rivalry become a huge part of both schools marketing and branding including the bonfire?

When will it happen?

Bonfire is never coming back as a school sanctioned event. Too great a liability risk. The game is not coming back to Thanksgiving weekend, as that would require the SEC to rework the schedule, and necessitate Kansas resuming its game with Missouri in order to make it work. That would leave the SEC schedule vulnerable to the whims of two unreliable schools, so that’s not happening. If A&M and Texas play a regular season game, it would have to be in September, which would be a problem for tying bonfire to game week.

I don’t think people care as much about the rivalry as they care about caring about the rivalry.

Iterations of this topic are posted weekly, and they’re simply used as excuses to troll. No one outside of the two universities involved honestly cares; yet “caring” about it has taken on a life of its own.

I care. I love rivalry games and I think this is one of the best in college football history. And I also like traditions and I think the bonfire was up there as well. However, I understand why neither have been continued. And honestly, I don't blame you for not wanting to play Texas considering what they were doing behind the scenes with the Pac whatever back in 2010-2011. Would love to see A&M kick their butts though.

Aside of the obvious reasons, that's a shame that the bonfire won't happen again.

Really seemed to bring the students together and it looked super cool.

I don’t think the bonfire should ever come back. 12 people died. That’s too big a tragedy.

The A&M/TU rivalry shouldn’t resume either. It became too toxic. When a college football rivalry affects a state’s political functions, it has become a social disease.

A&M is doing well without either and shouldn’t consider reinstating them. I think it would be going backwards for the school.

I must admit, your Ted talk post was enlightening. There really is no parallel to what occurred between UT and A&M in 2010-2011. That was incredible. Screw tSips.

The game won’t come back until both sides have abandoned any ego on the subject, and it likely won’t be agreeable to either team if it’s not: home-and-home every year, preferably on thanksgiving, when each school doesn’t already have other high quality power 5 non-conference teams scheduled.

You’ll probably be waiting a while until you see it again. Which both schools seem evidently fine with for the time being.

Idk anything about the bonfire but I’m pretty sure it’s held off campus now and not an official school event any longer? I think it still happens, though

Awesome memorial. If you haven’t had a chance to visit while going to a game, you should take the time to.

I think each specific one is pointed toward the deceased’s home town? Very touching stuff

Correct.

Bonfire still happens off campus as a non-university affiliated event prior to our Rivalry Week game. It's not the same, but it's never going to be done on campus again. Too much liability. The university simply can't be involved in it like the old days.

And agree 100% with Wolfhoud. The events that led to the cessation of the rivarly went way beyond normal rivalry stuff. Texas tried to blow up a conference and decide the future of the rest of the conference members without even involving them in an attempt to redraw the college landscape in their own preferred image. Staggering arrogance. Terrible business partners. I don't want A&M athletics to have anything to do with them for a long time.

SEC may be a meatgrinder on the field, but at least the members all work together to create a quality conference. Texas is toxic.

To this day, I can still remember exactly where I was when I heard about The Bonfire collapsing.. This was simply one of the best college football traditions out there in my opinion..

At halftime of the game played a couple of days later, the Texas Band played Amazing Grace @ Kyle Field. I still get chills watching this performance. Definitely made me proud to be a Longhorn, and more importantly on that day, a Texan. The Aggies & Longhorns don’t agree on many things, but on that day, they stood together as Texans to pay respect to the students that were gone way too soon.

The game could be back tomorrow if A&M really wanted it to be. But they don’t. They have the money to make it happen. And we learned from last season, schools can find an opponent and make travel plans within a week.

The Bonfire burning was just the culmination of the events of that semester.

Cut in September
Load in October
Stack, push and burn in November.
