Florida and UT Austin are public ivies.

Georgia and A&M are solid second tier schools.

The rest are fun to watch in football.

Surprised how far UAT has fallen. At one time, they were top 100.

Bama has become 5 year Disney World for dumb rich kids from the northeast who want to cosplay greek life before accepting a middle management position as a failson in their family’s company.

The drop off after the Ags is surprisingly steep.

Do you honestly think there is that big of a difference between the students at UA compared to AU?

Yes. Yes I do.

While Bama has been on a race to the bottom of admission standards, Auburn has been increasing standards and is quickly becoming very difficult for many kids to gain acceptance.

Auburn is absolutely dominating Bama in admission of kids from the best high schools in the state.

From the Birmingham Over-the-Mtn schools (Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hoover, Spain Park, Oak Mountain), Auburn is drawing 50% more students compared to Bama and it’s been this way for a decade. In the most recent statistics, Auburn enrolled 492 kids from these schools to Bama’s 336.

From the Huntsville area, the Madison schools (Bob Jones and James Clemons) broke for Auburn 114-67 (63%-37%).

Taking the Top 15 large public high schools in the state (Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Hewitt-Trussville, James Clemons, Oak Mtn, Bob Jones, Auburn, Hoover, Hartselle, Spain Park, Huntsville, Fairhope, Gulf Shores, and Chelsea)…. In the most recent statistics, Auburn enrolled 1066 students to Bama’s 604 (64%/36%).

It’s been this way for over a decade.

When your best in-state kids are choosing Auburn by a 2-1 ratio over a decade+ long period, it’s going to have an effect.

And it’s not like these out of state kids are choosing Bama for academics. They are marketing themselves to the the types of kids who choose Bama because academic standards are relatively low, there is a strong Greek life, and a good party scene. And these kids come to Tuscaloosa and have a fun four years and head right back to where they came from and their memories of college become a distant memory.

Alabama was extremely short sighted to turn their backs on in-state kids to try to lure out of staters.

People will make fun of this, but I paid for this tuition just to end up working with Vanderbilt grads who are swamped with student loans .

We may be last, but willing to bet it's one of the best ROI value degrees.

100% truth.

Some magazine coming up with a formula to split hairs and put numbers next to universities is a pretty absurd endeavor. People eat it up, but it means nothing.

The formula for real success is: get your degree (optional), get a job, work hard, and build a professional reputation, build income, manage your income responsibly.

There is nothing more obnoxious than the guy at work that still crows about college rankings 5 years+ into their career. If that's what youre proud of once you're focused on career, it's basically an admission that you never accomplished anything of note after graduating. Aka, a professional failure.

It's actually impressive how bad Bama is at school. They are basically the South's Boise St.

Florida is a good school, and it looks really affordable if you're in-state.

I do business with a guy in Florida whose son goes to UF. He said because of the state's Bright Futures scholarship program, most who have the academic credentials to get accepted to UF go with zero tuition cost. The new University President, Ben Sasse, has said this is not a sustainable fiscal model so he will likely be limiting this (somehow) in the future.

I don't get college rankings like this. I can't find a single academic department (Engineering, Finance, Computer Science, etc.) where UF ranks ahead of Texas but, somehow, as an institution, UF is ranked ahead of Texas. I think a lot of the complaining about academic rankings would go away if they actually made sense.

20% of the ranking is based on peer assessment

I'm not arguing that. In fact, I agree wholeheartedly with you in that UA is just not cutting it with the in-state recruitment.

If this was the case wouldn't the average ACT for incoming freshmen be a lot lower compared to UA? Last time I saw it was like 27 for AU and a little over 26 for UA. That is not a huge difference.

I agree with you again here. You make valid points and I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I am just questioning the discrepancy overall. The students UA does attract are not at the bottom of the well here and it seems like when they are in engineering/business/etc competitions with other schools (all which seem to be much more highly ranked) UA either wins or are in the top group
