You know little about which you speak. There are basically two different types of students at each school. UGA has many kids from Metro-Atlanta, who were born all over the US/world whose families moved to Atlanta with corporate transfers, medical careers, etc. Most of these kid’s parents are highly educated professionals, who have provided good educations for their kids. Auburn students tend to come from Alabama.
Hold up. I'm as proud of the University of Georgia as anyone... but this is pretty ridiculous.
First off, 35% of kids that attend Auburn are from out of state compared to less than 10% of kids that attend Georgia being from out of state. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, but Georgia has one of the lowest out-of-state attendance percentages of any major public school in America.
So I guess your argument boils down to people being from Georgia (Atlanta in particular) are simply more educated and well-to-do compared to people from Alabama.
Yes, I think you can make a facts-based argument that Georgia is far better off if you are comparing states as a whole. But just as the typical Georgia student is not from some small rural town like Statesboro, the same goes for Auburn and Alabama. The typical Auburn (or Alabama) student for that matter is not from some small country town like Demopolis.
Auburn is extremely heavy with kids coming from Birmingham's Over-the-Mountain Area. In fact, it runs over 11% of Auburn's total enrollment each year. I'm very familiar with both Birmingham and Atlanta, and I can tell you there is virtually zero difference in kids that grow up in the wealthier parts of metro Atlanta and the kids that grow up in the OTM area of Birmingham.
... and yes, most all of these kids are children of "highly educated professionals, who have provided good educations for their kids."

The separation is much more than that.
How does the separation compare with Kennesaw State? ...because that's really where you went to school.

Glad LSU is above some.

Actually I know quite a bit about this. I am in academia, and I work with students from SEC schools on a regular basis and evaluate academic performance of students from undergraduate schools across the country on a regular basis. So I suspect I am in a better position to make my comment about relative qualities of institutions than you are.

I did indeed take two summer classes at KSU in order to graduate on time. Where did you graduate from?

You’re forgetting one small detail. What’s the population of Metro Atlanta compared to Birmingham? Many times the number of quality students to choose from in the Atlanta area compared to B’ham. I know personally of kids with 4.0 GPAs being rejected by UGA. Think that happens at Auburn?

Why is Georgia ranked so low?

Because no Auburn posters would bring it up if the roles were reversed, right?

quote:This whole discussion is silly. The purpose of state-funded universities isn't to be these super-prestigious institutions gated to only the smartest kids. That doesn't serve their states well, and the universities recognize this. Shoot, that's why UF, as great of a school as it is, has its deal to guarantee admission to Santa Fe grads.

I've taken classes at multiple top-100 world universities (public and private) across three different continents. The difference in quality of student "at the top," so to speak, between any of them and Auburn (only SEC school I can speak towards) is negligible. To act like this isn't normative, or that the same can't be said for the students "at the bottom" within the SEC is absolutely delusional.
But to succumb to the rhetoric for a second, let's say the latter is the case. Honestly, if Auburn is taking students with significantly poorer academic records and still pumping out higher average salaries than UGA, what the heck does that say about the quality of education at the two places?
