There were a lot of years with BCS controversy, for whatever reason the train wreck that was 2001 doesn't get talked about a ton. Nebraska lost their last regular season game by 26, didn't play in their conference championship, and somehow got to play for a national title anyway.

Hard to compare to more recent title teams because the eras are pretty different, still contend that Miami team was for sure one of the all-time greats. Only two close games were on the road against two ranked teams, and they absolutely murdered several other ranked teams.

Miami was robbed vs OSU in that 2002 season. Should have been another championship.

Well that and also how badly they beat just about everyone else.

The old Big 8 conference was a joke. Nebraska and Oklahoma beat everyone 50-0 every week all throughout the '70s and '80s, but they struggled mightily against FSU and Miami and their great defensive fronts. And by the mid '90s there wasn't even an Oklahoma to contend with anymore.

'95 Nebraska did not face a Selmon brother or Tony Casillas or Jerome Brown or Cortez Kennedy or Warren Sapp or any of those bad arse DL that used to frick up Nebraska's run game.

They ran through the Big 8 with obscene scores like they always did but did not meet a bad arse defense in an Oklahoma or bowl opponent like they used to. '95 Florida was young and tissue soft on defense.

Unpopular opinion, Tennessee could have beaten Miami in 2001

Absolutely, we would have been underdogs sure, but we would have fought with them. Tennessee was saturated with future pro bowlers in 2001. Any team with Albert Haynesworth and John Henderson starting side by side at DT has a chance in any given game. They had Jeremy Shockey, we had Jason Witten. Casey Clausen was every bit as talented of a college QB as Ken fricking Dorsey was. Fulmer would have had the boys ready to play.

97 Nebraska was stout too. Believe they split with Michigan? They crushed Tennessee in the Orange Bowl that year. Absolutely humiliated us.

They did. Got lucky as hell in the Missouri game that year.

To me, that's the biggest knock on Osborne's mid '90s teams. Not a lot of stout competition on a weekly basis in hostile environments. In fact, if it hadn't been for the move to the Big 12 in '96, Nebraska would have played for another championship in the bowl game. Lost to Texas in the Big 12 championship.

'95 Nebraska had none of that. Shitty conference in the last year of the Big 8, no conference championship, no playoffs, and only 12 games.

They had 4 top 10 teams in 1995.

38 future NFL players with 17 of them being first rounders. I would say they are the least overrated team. There are a lot of teams I would put before them.

Nah, Ohio State is the one that got screwed in the final minutes. Game should have never gone to overtime.

Washington, Syracuse, Florida State, and Virginia Tech all finished 2001 ranked, and lost to Miami

Kansas State had the #2 defense in CFB in 1995. They finished the season 10-2

It simply didn’t matter against Nebraska

If there was a “conference championship” it just would’ve been another Husker beatdown

I hate and I mean hate Nebraska even worse then Kansas but damn dude they played 4 top 10 teams and won by an average of almost 31 points. Closest game was like 24 points. Then you show your ignorance by bashing the old Big 8/12. Within a decade of that 95 national championship teams in NU 94, 95 & 97, OU 85 & 2000, Texas 2005 and Colorado 1990.

So that basically leaves 2005 Texas as the de facto greatest team of all time. Thanks.

The 1994-2002 Big 8/12 was better than the SEC during those years

Nebraska beat Miami, trounced Florida, and dominated Manning’s Vols to win their national championships

Kansas State was a power from 1995-2003. In 1997 and 1999, their only losses were to Nebraska (and those Husker teams stomped Tennessee in bowl games)

Colorado was a considerable power from 1989-2002

Texas was a weaker power, but still really good

Oklahoma got strong again with Stoops and shutout FSU in the national championship game

A&M upset undefeated KSU in the Big12 championship in 1998

Mid 90s Nebraska was an absolute machine. Completely eviscerated 95 Florida and 97 Tennessee.

I do agree FSU probably would have faired a lot better due to familiarity with Osbourne's teams.

Yes, the FSU offense never scored, despite entering the game averaging 40 points a game

I mean...half of the conference finished in the AP Top 10 in 1995. Nebraska were your national champions, Colorado finished #5, Kansas State clocked in at #7, and Kansas rounded them all out at #10. And then of course you have Florida, who Nebraska beat the dog shite out of, finishing at #2 that year. So Nebraska defeated the #2, #5, #7, and #10 teams in 1995 by an average score of 49-18.

Don't remember, but FSU played in the championship game in 98, 99 and 2000 so probably were still pretty good.
