I’m not a road-tripper (prefer air travel); but for those who drive/RV, this new interstate (connecting military installations in five states) offers an additional travel option for SEC games.

I’m halfway convinced this whole thing was done so people don’t have to drive through Jackson. If so, probably a sound decision. Big wins for Gulfport, laurel and meridian

It looks to me like South Louisiana cities (Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, New Orleans) are the biggest loser in this new highway. The Port of Gulfport is going to explode with growth to the detriment of the Port of New Orleans.
And Shreveport and Monroe are equally as screwed because a lot of that traffic will be rerouted onto I-14 and off I-10/12 and I-20. Cassidy royally screwed Baton Rouge here because it ensures that the Miss River bridge over Baton rouge isn't going to be expanded anytime soon now.

Hwy 30 leaving college station would just be renamed I-14?

That's great and all.
But we will all be dead by the time the interstate is completed. Just look at how slow I-69 has come along.

Not necessarily. Last drawups hadn't decided whether I-14 would follow US-190 or Hwy 30 between Huntsville and Bryan. Early on, some plans called for the route to entirely miss Bryan and just go north from Huntsville along the existing I-45 and then shoot west straight to Hearne.

I'll start the daily I-14 is backed up thread

Should have some stretches in west TX with no speed limit.

This will go right through my hometown of Natchez, I just can't imagine that.

That is the way it appears to be done now. The part in Alabama is exactly where US80 currently sits. Large parts of what is now I-22 were also once highways with a different name.
As far as the communities, it won’t help them. It will devastate them. Interstates are limited access. Property owners will have to drive miles to get from one side of their land to the other, neighbors will be cut off from each other, and every mom and pop store and gas station along that route but not deemed worthy of an exit just got a going out of business sign posted for them.

This shite would have been useful when I was going Augusta to San Angelo for grad school.

The area from Laurel thru Selma will be like I-22 (a complete ghost-town)

On things like this is there a minimum miles that need to be done per year?
So it doesn’t take 4 decades and is outdated by the time it’s finished?

Approved my arse. Wait til every environmental and citizen group has filed their lawsuits before you say any new highway route has been approved. It will be a good 8-10 years before they build it. Part will be geotechnical investigation, concepts, public meetings etc. Good thing Eisenhower started the Interstate System because we would never get it built today.

An Interstate that runs through Selma, Uniontown, Faunsdale and Demopolis? I can't even fathom that.
However, most of that stretch of Highway 80 between Columbus and Cuba is 4 lane, separated highway already outside of the cities.

The portion that would go through Alabama is essentially US 80.
It is probably the least traveled US highway in the entire state.
Would be a useless interstate for most Alabamians
