SEC shorts video about 1998 season review appeared on my Youtube suggestions.

Watching it, I noticed how really bad the SEC was that year.

Looked up the standings and here they are:

Eastern Division
No. 1 Tennessee 13 – 0
No. 5 Florida 10 – 2
No. 14 Georgia 9 – 3
Kentucky 7 – 5
Vanderbilt 2 – 9
South Carolina 1 – 10
Western Division
Mississippi State 8 – 5
No. 16 Arkansas 9 – 3
Alabama 7 – 5
Ole Miss 7 – 5
LSU 4 – 7
Auburn 3 – 8

(Thank you Auburn for keeping us from finishing last in the West )

Their non conference consisted of an 8-4 Syracuse, a3-8 Houston, a 4-8 UAB, and then an 11-2 FSU in the title game.

They beat only two teams with double digit wins that year: Florida and FSU. Two others had 9 wins, two had 8, and two had 7.

The other five teams they beat that year had 4 wins or less.

What a bad year for college football and the SEC in general.

May be mediocre but they still won a title.

Reminds me of the question "you know what they call the student with the lowest grades in med school when they graduate?"

Took a bad play call by Houston Nutt and a fluke fumble for them to get past Arkansas.

I agree. Just had my interest peaked by the video and looked into it.

SEC used to be really bad in the 90's, not just LSU as most of us LSU fans believe.

Doctor.

Dad is a doctor. His uncle is a judge. His uncle told that joke to my dad. My dad responded with: "What do you call the student with the lowest grades in law school when they graduate? -- Your Honor."

Sounds about normal.

I mean, Mississippi State won the West that year. MISSISSIPPI STATE. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Led by Donovan McNabb. They were a good team

Teams only played 11 games back then. Give everyone another game against a directional team like now, that number is 4. Looks like they beat 4 teams who finished the year in the top 16, I’d hardly call that mediocre. You’ll find plenty of national champions with similar or worse resumes

Right?

Does explain why the Ole Miss fan didn't like the OP.

Miss St was cheating their asses off back then. They had good football teams unlike what most of what we experienced for the last 20 years

The SECW sucked in the 90s

There’s a reason Florida won the SEC 4 years in a row before VOLS won in 97 and 98. Those two programs were way ahead of the pack during that period.

They beat a good Florida Stste team for the natty. Florida was good. Arkansas was good. State backed into the West title but played well in the championship game. They had a fourth quarter lead.

UCLA was the best team in the nation.

2007 LSU was the absolute worst.

Lost to 2 middle of the road SEC teams near the end of the season and played a mediocre SEC East team in the title. Then played a mediocre OSU team in the title to win the Mickey Mouse 2007 championship.

That team was loaded and so was the one the year after. Wasted by Nutt.

Arkansas was talented that year but Nutt underachieved with Darren McFadden and Felix Jones.

Tennessee got lucky as hell that year. Florida lost 20-17 at Neyland in OT on a missed 32 yd FG by our kicker. UF had 5 turnovers.

Tennessee had lost 5 in a row, so they were not bashful about printing the shirts.

For a season, that was the luckiest team I've ever seen.

Thought Kentucky was before November.

But we can argue the fact that the 1998 Tenn team may have been better, but there was nothing mediocre about that 2007 season.

And when the final BCS standings came out, a 10-2 LSU leaped over a 10-2 VT to play OSU. Even VT didn't have an issue with this. Because LSU destroyed them that year 48-7.

LSU played more ranked teams, their opponents had much better records, and the season itself was possibly the most chaotic and memorable season ever in College football for everyone.

Every fan will have great memories of the year their team won it all, but there are very few years that every fanbase remembers like that one.

So Tennessee was the LSU of the 90’s. Always in second place because more often than not they couldn’t get past Spurrier and Florida, like LSU with Saban and Alabama.

Truth.

But when we did, we each made it worthwhile.
