In fairness, they have every right to be upset. The officials, as I understand it have been cautioned to allow a play to play itself out before calling it dead, then it can be sorted through replay. The officials clearly blew the play dead prematurely and it cost Arkansas the win.

If it had happened to us we would be talking about it for years down the road, as evidenced by the off sides call in the National Championship game.

...what would it have hurt to hold off on blowing the whistle ?
I have a personal friend (Bobby Ables)LINK / who I immediately phoned last evening post UA v AU game and asked him about THE CALL. Bobby, through his vast experience of officiating high level collegiate football games told me that each Summer the officials are required to attend a 2 week seminar on new rules and rules that are to be specifically enforced. Bobby told me that, without fail, the main point of emphasis in every meeting he attended as a football official was to "NEVER BLOW THE WHISTLE TOO SOON. IT'S FAR BETTER TO LET THE PLAY CONTINUE AND SORT IT OUT LATER VIA REPLAYS AND REFEREE MEETINGS ON THE FIELD." So the officiating crew screwed up emphasis rule number 1, they jumped the gun on blowing the play dead. AU, fans enjoy your little win. It will be the tough sledding from now on against the Hogs.

Not immediately

How quickly are most fumbles recovered that you see? Are most of them recovered within two seconds or dropping the ball? GTFOH

The SEC office is saying............replay did get it right.
But they didn’t. Replay said “the call stands”

That’s incorrect. The SEC is saying in fact replays did notice it was a backwards pass without immediate recovery. So, the correct call at that point was to overturn the call, auburn retains possession where the ball stipped, and the play starts with a running clock.

They completely got it wrong saying “the call stands”. The SEC needs To admit that. They look foolish saying replay got it right.

The proper call on replay was “After review, the quarterback made a backwards pass with no immediate recovery of a dead ball. Auburn will retain possession where the ball stopped, and play will resume on my whistle”

Feels like we are missing something important here. Well, a couple of things actually. 1. We are angry about the refs blowing the whistles when they shouldn’t have and that’s true, no doubt...but think about how many times in your football watching life you’ve seen a muffed spike, then thrown backwards? Had it not been muffed, the rules of the ball being live of backwards, or being the subject of grounding dont apply. So let’s not act like this was some sort of clear situation for the refs to call when we have never seen this occur ourselves in our football watching lifetimes. 2. If we are wishing the whistles hadn’t blown, why the hell are we assuming Arkansas would have recovered? We have no idea what would have happened. Our #3 and #11 had great shots at recovery but let up after the official was blowing his whistle repeatedly, standing over the ball and making the “incomplete pass” sign as the ball bounced off his foot. There were also several Arkansas players standing there not going after the ball because they thought it was dead. 3. Anyone arguing that a play most players didn’t pursue at all, and not a single player from any team played from the initial whistle thru recovery. Clearly the recovery was not the immediate action following the whistle. The only real honest argument here is that the whistle shouldn’t have blown, play should have been allowed to continue, Arkansas might have recovered, Auburn might have missed the slightly longer field goal. There is zero certainty that Arkansas would have won. Better chance. But that’s it.

Whining isn't gonna change the outcome. It was a terrible call, but then again, if we don't stop fricking up so much on special teams we'll lose another game or two we should have won.

Regardless, our trajectory as a program is shooting up.

Pittman was the perfect hire for our program. Our players love and respect him. He will recruit well, and once we get some SEC caliber athletes in here, we'll make some serious noise in the SEC. I whole heartedly believe that.

Arkansas’ roster is...um...challenging for any coach. Yet, here they are playing really well. I’d be really encouraged if I were an Arkansas fan. As an Auburn fan, our trajectory is pretty troublesome. Gus’s teams do tend to improve (more than, for instance Bama who is always ready to play game 1), so it’s possible, but I’m not holding my breath

Corona and the financial impact likely has us stuck with Gus through next season regardless.

Yeah I think you have to sympathize a bit with the refs here. It’s just natural to blow the whistle on a spiked ball. You could ref 10k games in your career and never see that Bo Nix disaster

Correct, except possession would be where the ball hit the ground following the whistle.

Is that all you have ? Not surprising. It is my sincere belief that you are one of the many "sidewalk fans" which permeate the state of Alabama so they can be a part of the Alabama v Auburn rivalry. However, if you actually did receive a degree in, well, you name the discipline, from AU, I'd immediately ask for a return of the money you spent there in your 6 to 8 years on campus based on your lack of an ability to focus on the subject at hand.

We’ve seen every angle repeatedly, slow-motion, heard from the refs after the fact, the SEC, etc...and we are still arguing about what should have been...yet we are furious that the refs, many of whom didn’t have the angle to see either the fumble or the fact that the pass was backwards, for not knowing precisely what to do in the moment that something none of us or them has ever seen happened.

On a spike, there is no "delayed whistle", so that BS does not apply here. What applies is the mistake from Nix and the White Hat from a fumbled snap. At that moment the spike is out of the question. Nix complicates everything by spiking the ball followed by White Hat with tunnel vision blowing the play dead. A whistle blown will the ball is loose goes back to the last team in possession. All action after the blown whistle does not matter. However, the NCAA has a replay situation that covers a screw up by the officials, but recovery has to be immediate. Because other players did not gain possession immediatly and the ball touched an official ...the replay cover did not apply.

White Hat broke one cardinal rule in Officiating . "expect the unexpected"

White Hat blew the call, unfortunately, Arkansas paid the price.

I guarantee, the White and his crew gets negative reviews during the phone call after the game and in the over all evaluation Tuesday or Wednesday this week.
