I am not one to follow recruiting very closely. I generally know where we stand amongst other teams and what 5/4 stars we have coming in, but that’s about it. With that said, I’m seeing the hype that is surrounding Bryce Young. Is he truly can’t miss? We’ve been here before with Star Jackson, Phillip Sims, Blake Barnett, etc. Is he on the level Tua was coming in as a freshman? How capable is this guy being a true difference maker year one?

He will have the most arm talent of any QB on the team the second he sets foot on campus. He apparently also has a pretty advanced understanding of how to play the position. But he's also pretty small, and you never know how the transition to college is going to go for any individual player. If he picks up the playbook quickly and proves to Saban that he can be trusted with the ball there will likely be a competition throughout the offseason and possibly into the first couple of games next season. I'd say Mac has the advantage right now though, just because he does know the playbook and already has some starting experience.

He looks as good as Tua did coming out. I don’t even think that’s really up for debate.

Will be start against USC next year? Probably not. Mac won’t have much of a leash though if I were a betting man

Outside of 2 passes Saturday Mac looked great, not just good. If young is able to take the job as a true freshman then we are set, cause it's gonna be hard to beat a 4th year Junior with game experience

Mater Dei is pretty much the USC QB feeder school. So, I think Bryce will have a good grasp of the playbook.

He is the highest rated QB we have ever signed and, from what I can tell, all of our rivals seem to think he is accurately rated and not at all overrated.

That tells me most everything I need to know.

Mac Jones will start next year.

If he struggles, you might see someone else.

Watched some highlights of Young for the first time today. Great arm, quick release and already in an RPO type system. Also have very quick feet.

His height bothers me though. He's "listed" at 5'11 so in reality he's probably 5'9

He's listed at 6' on numerous websites and has been referred to a "a six foot QB" on numerous websites as a senior.

I think the 5'11" stuff is from his junior year.

You thought so? I don't think he throws a great deep ball, but maybe that can be developed with more practice time with the 1s?

Bryce is basically a black Tua and he's coming in early. It's between Taulia and Bryce. Mac won't be out starter next year.

I would take that bet that Mac wont start. Saban stuck with a pretty subpar quarterback in Hurts as a sophomore in 2017 even when it was clear to everybody with a lick of sense that we won those games in spite of his poor play that year. Saban loves him some experience.

He probably won't start the USC game, but might before the season is over.

Remember when everyone wanted Blake Barnett to play as a true freshman?

I really have no reason to believe that Mac won't start against USC.

There's been no indication his commitment is anything other than solid. His comments when he flipped from USC seemed to show a lot of thought and discussion went into his decision.

Were are going to have a Kelly Bryant / Trevor Lawrence type situation. I think Mac will obviously start the season as QB 1 but there may come a time where a decision has to be made for the betterment of the offense.

That time came in 17 when Tua was obviously much better even as a true freshman and Saban stuck with Hurts. Tua wasn't just better by a little bit either. He should have started every game that year starting with game one against FSU. Wills should have started over Womack at RT as well. This year was no different with a disruptive beast of a man in Barmore not even get serviceable reps till after midseason. So I am sorry but I don't trust Saban to make the same call that Dabo did when his track record says he doesn't always play the best player.

I think it's more complicated than that. To say Tua should have started day 1 over the returning sec offensive player of the year is pure hindsight. Jalen didn't really struggle that season until around the State game. I think a better comparison would be the year before when Saban ended up going with Jalen over Bateman and Barnett. That's more what this situation reminds me of.
