My concern when Rhea left was actually that speed would either remain stagnant or even regress
Rhea was more heavily invested in the science of how to improve unilateral strength and flexibility, both of which translate to improvements in acceleration and top speed. Not to say Ballou isn’t trying to make them faster, but I think Rhea understood that specific aspect better. It was somewhat evident in what looked like players being out of position a lot this season (also scheme related) but even more apparent during what was mostly just average speed scores for the majority of our blue chip players that participated in the combine
Both Smitty and JaMo admitted working with Rhea helped them find another gear. Just the humble opinion of an ex-NCAA strength coach.
Hoping Ballou makes some tweaks to the program, or even reaches out to Rhea for some ideas on how to continue to maximize the team’s speed/acceleration

If we can’t get one of the speed guys from that class to pop questions need to be asked.
Their failure to get open was one of my biggest questions about BOB last year.
Even if they weren’t running the best routes or always in the right place they should’ve been separating with that speed from average to poor defenses and it just wasn’t usually the case last year.
One of them should’ve been at a minimum a poor man’s version of JaMo but it didn’t really happen.
They showed flashes throughout the season. They were also true freshmen. And the thing that is most promising is that they looked really good in our bowl game.

Yes, if the freshmen receivers continue to play like they did in the bowl game, that would be huge. Plus, I think then can become good blockers, because they look more physical.

Bond, Prentice, Brooks and Burton all caught TD passes against Kansas State. Then you add in Benson and Hale. Lots to be excited about.

I’m particularly excited about Benson, Bond and Law. Burton has been too inconsistent for me to be hyped about but would love for him to show me more

I thought that Burton looked very good against Ole Miss, Auburn and Kansas State. Bryce's shoulder injury really hurt the development of the passing game until the final few weeks. What we saw against Auburn and Kansas State is what we should've seen all year. Unfortunately. Benson looks like an NFL player right now. He will be the #1 WR in 2023. I don't have any doubt. Bond is a big play threat who can take it to the house on any play and he's also a better route runner than people think. Law looks almost like a running back with his athletic build but he has really good run after the catch ability and strong hands.

Prentice was the biggest downfield threat out the freshmen last year, I am excited to see how he progresses. Showed a lot of promise.

Checking in now. Ready for the spring game to kick off.

Rewatched the TAMU '22 game.
Milroe had some pretty good moments in that game but also had some disastrous plays that were almost bench-able in the 2nd quarter.
I think that Gibbs looked the best he had all season in the 1.5 games he played with Jalen Milroe at quarterback. Milroe's honest threat to the backend of the run defense allowed Gibbs the time to find creases before the backside defender could run him down. If the order of the day is for Alabama to beef up on the OL and reprioritize physical domination in the trenches then no one should underrate the positive effects Milroe would have on the rushing offense even when he's handing it off.
His two fumbles are 100% first-time starter stuff. His awareness in the pocket and/or internal clock on the arrival of a rusher was just not there. He was holding the ball high with good pocket form pre-windup imo. These weren't flippant ball handling mistakes.
His interception was an awful throw - completely misread a sorta obvious 3 deep coverage and threw it right to the MOF safety - and I think that made BOB decide to drastically curtail the throwing offense the rest of the game. He made some good decisions and nice throws on his three touchdowns. Hit guys in stride on a crosser and slant. Found a reasonably tight window on a TE seam for the other.
Overall, he needs a lot of development but I don't think he's the lost cause some people think. I would not be surprised if he won the job but it is only going to happen if he's put in the work in the offseason and summer.

Any word how the QBs and ILBs are looking so far this spring? Is anyone standing out so far?

We've only had one practice.

Give it a little time. I’ll be at some of the scrimmages and report back.

I don't know but I can tell you I saw photo from practice and Milroe looks more like a ILB than a QB. His arms are huge.

JM should’ve had multiple other picks in that game running a fraction of our playbook and missed wide open looks downfield all night almost costing Bama the game. However it looked on TV it seemed far worse from where I was sitting.
He is without question the most explosive player we’ve ever had take a snap in Tuscaloosa.
He might be the most explosive athlete in the country period.
But he was so raw he was barely playing QB in a traditional sense, the game was happening miles faster than he could process.
With the right QB coach and a system tailored to his game along with a year or two to learn he has no ceiling, I just don’t know if he’s ready to win big games, much less championships at the P5 level.

Alabama has good athletes at WR and RB. The QB needs to be able to get it to them first. I feel like Milroe would be a great quarterback for a bad, talent poor team.

He would have been a perfect fit for Auburn’s when Malzahn was their coach. Milroe is an outstanding player. He definitely needs to be utilized in some way if he doesn’t start l.

I feel like he could and probably will be a great quarterback for an elite, talent blessed team.
