Mega stadiums

I know the huge stadiums prevalent in the SEC are great for revenue for the school (and speak positively about interest in the sport), but my question is do you, as fans attending the games, prefer these mega stadiums to "normal" sized college stadiums in the 60 to 70k range?
Personally, I like the intimacy of the smaller stadiums. I hate nose bleed seats and the noise on the field is largely impacted by the lower level fans. Plus, the sheer headache of getting to and from a 100k stadium. I know a lot of UGA fans who don't go to games anymore in Athens for this reason alone.

LOL. Yes, as an LSU fan, I hate the home field advantage we get from 92K (going to be 102k) screaming fans. Id much rather a mellow crowd that enjoys watching a pillow fight.

The big stadiums are fine for big time opponents, not for the directional schools.

This is a post a poor college would make to make their little stadium feel less shitty.

I'm in favor of big stadiums, but not everyone needs them. Auburn, for example, doesn't need 100k seats. We're a good bit smaller than some other fan bases we compete with, and I'd much prefer we sink 200m into closing in an endzone with a pavilion, suites and stadium aesthetic upgrades than try and match numbers with bigger schools.

You have grown accustomed to sitting in basketball gyms.

In 20 years these places will be empty. More capacity is not necessarily better in the current and future climate, IMO, better amenities and higher prices seats will dominate.

Gee, a fan of a program with a dinky stadium prefers dinky stadiums.
Surprise! Surprise!

This reminds of real estate ads that call small houses "cozy". frick your weak little "intimate" stadium.

I am going to guess once you take away the mega stadiums - say 90K or more in seating, a "normal" stadium would be more like the size of Vanderbilt's in the 40K to 50K range.
ACC has 7 stadiums below 58K
B1G has 5 stadiums between 45K and 55K
B12 has 5 stadiums below 58K and only 2 over 80K
PAC has 7 stadiums below 57K and only 2 over 80K
SEC has 1 stadium below 57K and only 8 over 80K

Not empty, but I agree with your general thought. I'm generally outspoken in wanting UGA to spend to improve facilities, but I'm glad UGA seems to be staying out of the stadium expansion game for now.

Not a fan of the trend. Bryant Denny looks nice and all, but those end zone upper deck seats are terrible for watching the game. When Saban leaves, they will be empty unless his replacement keeps the train rolling.

This.
Places that currently have big stadiums will be fine, but most current schools with average sized stadiums should focus on amenities and the game experience.

which is exactly why i was glad LSU didnt really increase capacity with their new expansion outside of suite and stadium club seating.

For a big game, a mega stadium is simply a surreal experience. For a lackluster game between lackluster opponents, a small, intimate venue is really fun. It's like the difference between seeing LSU vs Alabama in Death Valley vs the same match up in Alex Box Stadium during baseball season. It's a completely different atmosphere, but not necessarily in a bad way. I'm not going to lie, it's fun going to games like ULL vs ULM at Cajun Field. It harkens back to a time before multi-minute long tv timeouts after every play, when not every moment was "brought to you by" some inane sponsor, when the band played during timeouts and between quarters instead of recognitions on the field for big donors, when you could drive up to the stadium an hour before the game and park for free in a decent spot, ect.
It's a pleasant experience, parts of which should absolutely be integrated into the mega-stadium experience.

If Face Values and donations continue to outstrip average fans rise in incomes this is almost assured.
If the bubbles burst and prices come back down the rise in population - say doubles in 20 years - should keep these venues full. Big crowds indicates big demand which drives scarcity.

Trends say fewer people are going to games. It probably is 75% correlated to the state of the economy & rising costs. Auburn simply cannot afford it to take on a 15-20K seat upgrade. We're looking more towards upgrading facility though. I think this SECN deal will do a lot for each school in this regard though.
