in other words, he's actively considering a few positions, and will be out the door as soon as he gets a check with enough zeroes on it.

Never say never but it is extremely doubtful he leaves this season without a major offer in a big conference and those don't come up too often.

The real question is, would this be good for Auburn? If the rest of the DCs in the SEC have figured the offense out (see the last few games), then it may not be a completely bad thing if he leaves.

He still has yet to run his offense fully, we don't have the personel to run it at the pace he wants to run it. He said it will likely be 2 more recruiting classes to get the players and experience to run it, the goal he wants right now is 80+ snaps per game when it is at full speed he wants 90+.
All offenses have been figured out, it comes down to execution and taking what the defense gives you.

There's no guarantee that AU has the patience to keep him for 2 more yrs. If I were betting, I'd say he will not be on the AU sidelines next season.

Standard coaches talk....I'm happy here...I have a big goal here...I don't plan on leaving.... Okay, I'll go ahead and say it, I am not going to be the next coach at.....oops, wrong guy and wrong school!!!!

Memphis has a TON of potential and he has to see it as another Tulsa or South Florida. A good recruiter and coach could rule that conference at Memphis. The offer comes and he bolts. He would be crazy not to.

I don't know that being a successful OC at Auburn is better for a coach's career than being a successful coach at a place like Memphis. And I think it is no real secret that Gus wants a 'big-time' HC gig ASAP. From what I've read from those who profess to know him, he thinks he is ready now. I think that Gus could easily follow Petrino's path and go to Memphis or Louisville after one yr at Auburn.
My gut tells me you have to strike while the iron is hot, and Gus is a red-hot commodity right now. Would one additional year as OC make him a better HC prospect? I really don't think so.

No, but, it would allow for other jobs to come open. Other jobs that are legitimate "big time" positions, instead of one where your University's football program is forced to practice at local high schools in the event of bad weather.

fwiw, you could be as right as you could be wrong. there would literally be NO point for anyone to divulge any other notion than an emphatic "NO" mid-season, unless they're really unhappy. it would be highly unprofessional and it would also lower his stock come contract negotiations time.
these reports are pointless unless you get to WATCh them say it and check their body language and such.

Not sure where you get your information but this in no way is true. The city of Memphis has some decent football talent each year, that's about all it has going for it though. I take that back, now that Cannon Smith is on the team they have Fred Smith in their pocket.
Schools like Tulsa and South Florida have thrown and continue to throw millions upon millions of dollars into their football programs. Memphis struggled to get $3 million for a new weight room. Memphis's practice facilities are terrible. They actually can't practice at their facilities if the weather is bad, they have to go to a local high school that has a field turf field, and their indoor facility is way too small for a team to really even practice in.
With Fred Smith on their side things can definitely change, but Memphis has a long way to go to even be considered as having any kind of potential.

Deangelo Williams - type players only slip up and go to a place like Memphis once every 10-15 years. But to think that Gus would be better off as an O-coordinator than getting head coaching experience is nothing more than wishful thinking on the part of Auburn that he stays. He will say the right things now, but if the right job becomes open he will jump.
