TBF, that two-fifty a month in 1981 would be $890 today so it's not that outrageous, pre-NIL that is.

Ole Earl will never be remembered for his smarts on this topic.

Earl Campbell is 36 in the linked interview and not a college athlete.

A college athlete wasn’t saying that then either. He’s on the set of Necessary Roughness in that interview lol. He had been retired from the NFL for like 5 years

He’s an awesome guy as well. Met him that same year when I was a bouncer/bartender on Sixth St. He came in to our bar (Maggie Mae’s) when he was starting his sausage business. Super approachable and gave a ton to the homeless community in Austin.

Jack Lambert said he was the most punishing RB he ever faced.

I think half the kids playing today would wet their pants if they had to go against him.

I was still on active duty in 81 when we had the 82nd ABN Div reunion in Houston at the Astro Village Hotel right near the old Astro Dome that summer.

I was sitting out front talking to a friend when some Oilers players jogged by ... including Campbell.

He had the biggest frickin' thighs I have ever seen. They were like tree trunks.

Imagine modern day players running around and near the stadium during summer camp.

Different world back then.

Anyways ... I also met some of the Band of Brothers guys that weekend including Dick Winters. The book had not come out yet ... but he was still famous among the WWII airborne guys so we all knew who he was. That was 45 years ago ... seems like yesterday. They had fought in WWII only 39-36 years earlier ... but they seemed so old at the time.

Good night fellas.
