and quite possibly ignore the success from 1983-1985? Do the major NCAA infractions overshadow 1984-1985?

Gators went 27-4-3 during those three years. 1984 was an SEC title season despite being vacated several months later. While on probation, Florida was still eligible for AP rankings. They were #1 in November before loss to Georgia. Had UF won out, they could have won their first national title while on probation.

Although I was way too young to grasp anything in the 80s, based on history, I feel as if 1983-1985 Florida doesn’t get the credit it deserves despite the circumstances.

1983 OC Mike Shanahan - graduate assistant national champion at OU, D-II national champion as an assistant, Super Bowl champion as an assistant, two-time Super Bowl champion head coach.

Galen Hall - OC at OU for the 1974-1975 national championship teams. The 1974 Sooners were on major probation.

The picture of the NCAA wheeling in the 100+ allegations of violations by Charlie Pell on hand trucks probably had something to do with it.

Fair assessment. Prior to the 80s the State of Florida had zero “major” programs. Within a decade it had 3. My guess is Miami soaked up all the attention in the 80s so no one noticed Florida was rising too until a big personality like Spurrier came in with an offense everyone wanted to see.

To say a recruiting scandal made people forget seems flawed. The 80s were the peak of NCAA cheating.

But they didn't and we can say the same about multiple 1 loss teams that were knocked out of NC contention.

And? Does a three stretch averaging 9 wins really mean a program has reached national powerhouse status?

Spurrier single-handedly turned the Georgia-Florida rivalry around. Brutally, thoroughly, and with great joy.

Georgia is just now pulling itself out of the football hell that Spurrier sent us to.

And Florida is just now returning to where it was prior to Spurrier.

Spurrier is Florida football. Florida football begins with Spurrier, and the only reason it doesn't end with him is because of Urban Meyer.

Thankfully, it seems like Florida has now fully reverted to its pre-Spurrier form. But yeah, make no mistake, Florida football started under Spurrier.

Like an onion there are a lot of layers here.

In 1979 when Florida hired Charley Pell, he did not retain any of the previous coaches, not a single one. Well one of those coaches was 1st year coach Steve Spurrier who coached the QB's and WR's.

Fast forward 11 years to Spurrier taking over Florida, and he always had a disdain for Florida football in the 80's. He never gave any credit to those teams and basically acted like that decade didn't exist.

I think it was both a personal grudge and also that Spurrier didn't like the cheating that went on. Either way, Spurrier ran a clean program and he won big, so his detractors quickly got in line and it is hard to find too much fault with a guy who is winning and not cheating.

As someone who was associated with the program in the 80's it sucks, but we know we had some bad arse teams no matter if we have the accolades or not.

I mean Florida football did pretty much start with Spurrier, not only as coach, but he was the first player at UF to win a Heisman, previous to any dates you have mentioned.

I’d say he is the most influential person when it comes to Florida’s football program.

Florida will have an undefeated season one of these days. I guess that’ll be post-Spurrier.

These days this may not seem like a big deal. But back in the day such a thing was a HUGE deal.

It’s true Florida football didn’t really become a thing officially until the 90s although they showed some promise in the 80s too.

It’s simple demographics. Until about 1970 air conditioning wasn’t a thing and Florida had a low population. Then as air conditioning became normal, more people were able to move there to the point that it’s the 3rd most populated state in the country now.

The fact that Florida football was an non-factor for many of its early years really shouldn’t be the expectation of it now considering how much figured a population is now with more options to recruit and develop local talent.

It is true that it has regressed to pre-spurrier pre-air conditioned times because the UAA is so incompetent, And it is a popular excuse that many Disney gators use to justify the poor performance that historically Florida has been a mediocre program besides 90-2009.

I’m not saying it should be a dominant force like the spurrier and Meyer years but the fact it’s so bad now is absolutely due to the corruption of the uaa

Charley Pell started to build Florida football but it never really took off until th 90's. I don't think anybody thought Spurrier would do what he did but the rise of Florida, Florida St and Miami coincided with the great Florida migration In 1950 Florida had 2.7 million residents. In 1990 Florida had grown to 21 million. Lots of kids at that time were staying in state at all schools so its not just coincidence that the Florida schools got good with the massive boom in people moving there.

Spurrier himself made it memorable. People remember him more than his seasons there.

OK, but the real question... When did it end? because it is dead now... I guess you could blame it all on "No Bowl Billy", but
