That was an absolute travesty. The BCS 'Human Poll' portion of the voting controlled by the Coaches was undeniably influenced by the lobbying for the 3rd place SEC team to get in over a 12-1 Big 12 Conference champion who destroyed Oklahoma by 6 touchdowns in the Conference championship game. Some had this team (OSU) as #2 going into that game.
In fact the publicly available record of the BSC Coaches 'Human' poll actually states clearly and lists in black and white which coaches moved 3rd place SEC ala. into the BCSNCG over 12-1 Oklahoma State, who they actually bizarrely and mysteriously and magically DROPPED ''''BELOW''' ala in the poll.
Even though Oklahoma State was the #2 team according to some of the coaches, enough of the rest of the coaches changed their vote and moved 3rd place SEC ala. OVER 12-1 #2 Big 12 Champion Oklahoma State.
Truly and comically (yet monumentally unfairly) astonishing.
Is it really though? Did an Okie State team that had just lost to a 6-7 Iowa State squad really deserve the nod over a Bama team that had a one very close loss to the #1 team in the country?
And OSU beat Oklahoma in their regular season bedlam rivalry. There was no Big 12 title game that year. Oklahoma was decent but not great that year, having already lost twice to Tech and Baylor.

LSU beating the Vols in the title game with a fricking dentist.

I’d add losing to Bama this past December as well. None of those other 3 teams in the playoffs were beating Georgia and we’d have a 3peat.

Another for Auburn: the 1988 "Earthquake Game" at LSU. Crazy, LSU can't move the ball a few yards and doesn't cross mid-field all game and suddenly Hodson hits like three straight 4th down passes to win the game.
Auburn would have been undefeated and would have played Tony Rice and ND in the Sugar Bowl for the MNC. Would have been a good matchup. Auburn's defense that year was salty, especially against the run and ND was all run.
To this day Auburn and ND have never played. I believe they are the only top 25 programs to never meet - maybe LSU-Michigan as well.

I don't count 1992 as we would have still finished behind an undefeated Bama team who just knocked off #1 Miami.
A win against 5th ranked Notre Dame would not vault us over.
We would have had as much claim to the 1992 title as 1991 Washington did.

1961 Texas vs. TCU - the DKR "cockroaches" game
TCU beat Texas 6-0 in Austin in the penultimate game of the regular season when Texas was No. 1. Texas would go on to win the cotton bowl regardless but finish No. 3
TCU finished 3-5-2 that season, but beat then-No. 1 Texas in Austin and tied then-No. 3 Ohio State in Columbus (who would finish 8-0-1 and No. 2)
What a weird season

Losing to LSU in1988 7-6 probably kept us from a chance.

Miami was #5 going into that bow game. Auburn not winning the ‘83 title is considered by many to be the greatest skrewjob in the history of CFB.
The only reason Miami was able to jump that high up the rankings is because all the teams at the top had just one loss.
An unbeaten ‘83 Auburn team would have undoubtedly won the championship that season.

In your OP basically only included end of the year games...
Here you are talking about a loss in the second game of the season.
As people have shown on this thread... there are lots of games that "cost" teams a national championship if you include the regular season.
One for you is Notre Dame defeating Oklahoma in 1957. That game is the reason that Auburn won the championship that year.

Mizzou was ranked #1 in both polls until they lost to Kansas in their final regular season game. Bowls didn't matter then so it definitely cost them something.

Not unless you were voted #1 in the AP or Coaches.

While 2012 is a good case you can’t forget about 1975. We were 10-0 and #2 in the country going to Arkansas and that game cost us not only a natty but an outright SWC championship as well. We ended up playing in the Liberty Bowl instead of the Cotton Bowl.

And yet couldn't beat Alabama when it really mattered. I know it has broken you. T's & P's

LSU ends Arkansas’ 22 game win streak and cost the Hogs back to back 64-65 National Championships (1964 Helms and FWAA Champions)

This is Arkansas luck for you, get screwed in 64 because they announced the championship before the bowl game, changed the rules to after bowl games and we lose the bowl……sigh..
