I think getting the Bama job would reignite a fire in Dabo. If it’s him we could do way worse.
So we’re down to looking for worst and less worst?

Oregon ain’t on the schedule. He beat Texas twice. I’ll give you that.
My real concern is him on the recruiting trail going head to head with the likes of Smart, Freeze, Kiffin, Sark…when Nick’s talent runs out will he have dudes coming in like we’re used to? Or will we be battling for top 15 recruiting finishes instead?
You win in this conf on the LOS. I think Lane understands that and can put a recruiting staff in place to get those guys.
Also if DeBoer is the guy is he going to keep players from leaving? Is he going to excite and connect with our current roster? I again think Kiffin can excel in that dept.
Passing up a HC that would walk to Tuscaloosa who is in this very conf winning and looked at as a legit contender to win it all next year. A guy who’s been here. Looked at as an offensive savant and runs the ball. Capable of hiring an elite staff…it’s crazy to me.
Lane turned down Auburn for this very moment and we’re going to whiff because ppl in high places are butt hurt. It really pisses me off tbh.
I think Kiffin would kill it here. Yet anytime his name is brought up with any guys that cover Bama they immediately turn their nose up. I just don’t get it.
1000% this. Good post.

The retards on the rant saying Lanning turned down the offer on Pat Mcafee were straight up lying.
I watched the interview, and while Lanning said he was committed to staying at Oregon, there was zero talk of an offer, much less that he turned one down. So again, we don't know if Lanning was even offered at this point.

That’s what’s so frustrating. They have made Kiffin into some sort of pariah,an untouchable ,outcast and what not. Guy would be great for the job. He is talented, experienced and highly motivated. It should only be between him and Sark but we are out there trying re-discover a Saban. So frustrating. Nothing against DeBoer but he would be much more of a risk than Kiffin by a long shot.

quote:They probably did have a good idea who it was going to be. It is likely that DeBoer was the focus from the beginning; that Lanning was never considered (with better talent he was 0-3 vs DeBoer in these last two years). With inferior talent CKD defeated CSS each of the last 2 years in bowl games - Alabama was 1-1.
What I dont understand is why the Team was told at their meeting that we would have a HC in place within 72 hours if they didn't already know who it was going to be ?
It was known that Byrne was very interested in CKD before this search even began. He's 5-0 vs Lanning and Sarkisian with less talent in the last 2 years; though more than half of his record was in the tiny NAIA, 104-12 overall is incredible; 25-3 at Wash, 37-9 in D1 is also impressive (in both years before his arrival at Wash and Fresno, they were 4-8, so he did not inherit much). Of course, having Penix join him in Wash was a great help. Nevertheless, no wonder Byrne was interested.
But 3+ years at D1 is not much and don't know what to think about his dazzling, NAIA record, 3 NCs in 5 years, 17-2 playoff record, but every opportunity he's had as a HC has been impressive, if not spectacular.

Honestly what sucks in all this. After watching the interview with Saban I really thought there would be a plan in place to replace the GOAT. Looks and sounds like there was no plan and he knew about 3 minutes before he walked in to tell everyone.

Everybody related to Bama hiring f up. including CNS
We should have had a coach in waiting
This is as comical as 2007. So when people said then that no coach wants Bama job then due to decline of program then ... complete lie. Bama is not an attractive place for family of coaches. Why would Sark wife leave Austin for T town.

Certainly there is a plan. But it is fluid because coaches we thought were great now suck and others emerge from nowhere.

I do certainly hope you’re right. Just has a chaotic feel to it. Had there been a plan. Would have been an actually announcement by Saban and he dispel all rumors. 24 hours later the new coach is introduced. This feels like anything but a plan.

Kiffin isn’t pariah just because he banged some boosters wife. His record against top teams is terrible. Look at how Georgia steam rolled him this year. Couple that with the antics he did before bailing on Saban before the NC team to take the FAU job and you have a terrible hire.
DeBoer on the other hand is a winner and has crushed it against top 25 teams. He’s the home run hire at this point. It’s an easy sell. Just played in a NC game, beat Texas multiple times, developed a Joe Moore line, 12-2 against top opponents, never banged an Alabama boosters wife or ditched Saban, and brought in decent coordinators including an OC saban went after last year.

It would have been better if Saban would have just postponed the players meeting for a week and told Byrne that he was for sure retiring. Put a lot of pressure on him to get something done quickly.

Dabo would not be my first choice but it would not be bad choice either.
My concerns with Dabo revolve around two things. First can he handle the pressure of the fans, alum/boosters, and the expectations at UA. Clemson that is not really there. The other is the what seems to b his lack of desire to deal with NIL and the transfer portal. With that said I have a good friend that is an alum/booster there and he said it is not him not wanting to but he is frustrated because there is very little support for it from the boosters. The school my friend also said that Clemson is not very supportive of transfer either and I know academically it can be hard to transfer in. But I also know he is an old school type of coach like Saban who did not like either as well.
The positives though for Dabo is he can coach on the field in my opinion. The players that play for hm love him. He seems to maintain the same type of control on and off the field in to the players like Saban. He definitely can recruit in the south and elsewhere. He also has done really well with the talent he has considering his recruiiting classes usually not top 5(not sure how many he has had).
The one positive though for Dabo is if he came to UA he would want it to be his last stop and retire here. There is not another coach, with the exception of maybe Kiffin, that might not get an itch for the NFL or when things were rough at times would not possibly jump ship. He would ride it out.

In hindsight after the 2020 season had saban retired we would likely be in a better situation. Sark could have been promoted and we wouldn’t have lost out on any titles. May be trending down more than we are now or could have won one more hard to say. Getting sark now seems like a better outcome than the likely one but we shall see.

Oregon was on Washington's schedule, though. Oregon had more talent than Washington, thanks to Nike bucks. And Oregon had Lanning, who everyone here seems to hold in higher regard. That makes no sense. DeBoer is obviously a good coach. Alabama's resources are better than anything DeBoer's ever had to work with, and he's won everywhere he's been. Saban can help him get recruiting and NIL established, there's already a system in place at Alabama. Absent Kirby or Sark, DeBoer may be our best option (Lane may not be hireable due to past hijinks).

I mean I get that. But this should be done by now if a true plan was in place. Have to keep this team and class together.

Dabo just gives off this televangelist snake-oil salesman vibe that rubs me the wrong way.
However, if he wins a couple titles in crimson without embarrassing us... I guess I'll have to let it slide.
