OMAHA, Nebraska – Mitchell Daly’s solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning gave national 2-seed Kentucky a dramatic 5-4 win over NC State in its Men’s College World Series opener before 24,888 at Charles Schwab Field on Saturday.
Daly’s blast over the left-field fence off NC State reliever Derrick Smith settled a tense affair in which both teams first provided plenty of drama in a wild ninth inning.
"I was just trying to see the slider up," Daly said. "And Cousey (UK assistant coach Austin Cousino) said he leaves it up sometimes. I saw it up, and I just went for it."
"What a game," Kentucky coach Nick Mingione said. "Just two teams just duking it out and taking advantage of opportunities."
