I wish y’all’s AD would have come out and publicly stated “We aren’t hiring Lane Kiffin. Stop asking”.

It would have saved some stress on my liver

But the freshwater jokes were so much fun.

That wasn't a native American joke. It was a Professor Longhair and/or Dr John doing lyric about Mardi Gras Indians. Professor Longhair was one of the best New Orleans piano players of all time. Funky as hell. Check out the song Big Chief. It's great

Refusing to hire the best candidate over petty nonsense has a real “Pride cometh before the fall” feel to it. Our entitled boosters could be our program’s undoing.
Unfortunately, Kiffin is foolish and wicked, overrated, and more importantly, he's 2-19 in his career vs ranked teams. He would be a raunchy Freeze-like hire who is incapable of running a big-time quality football program, even more so, the preeminent program in college sports.

I don't know if even Alabama could get him over the hump enough to win a big football game. Almost like him as an OC under a task master (though he has fouled that up) but not as a HC.

The only guy who could’ve possibly not being a drop off after Saban is Smart and there was ZERO chance of that happening
IMO, Smart is overrated. He is sitting on a recruiting pot of gold. He seems to have no imagination. He's just a placeholder. What's he going to do now that CNS is not around to copy, as well as, welch off of his evaluations?

I wouldn't be surprised if he won little in terms of titles in the foreseeable future. He has 2 SEC titles in 8 years. He was fortunate in both of his NC runs, with enough talent for #2 and #3 combined and coaching vs stodgy Mich, TCU and Ryan shrinking Day. When he walks out of his back door he trips over 3 four stars and 2 five stars, so he has more talent than anyone.

If you can consistently complete a forward pass, you can put up 40+ on his "greatest D of all time".

What?! He had penix, a great wr corp, and rb that will most likely be drafted in the NFL.
He and his staff developed Penix and the great WR corps. They were not highly regarded out of HS. DeBoer was Penix's OC at Indiana, Penix liked him so much that he followed when he got the Wash job.

Exactly, Alabama with Saban was one of the absolute top jobs in the country. Alabama without Saban will be difficult: taking over after the GOAT. I can imagine Sark rather staying at Texas. Like Lanning: he'd rather be the coach that comes in AFTER Saban's successor.
Lanning was never offered, don't know about Sarkisian.

Who the frick wanted to come when we were under sanctions?
Richard Williamson, who was the other end from Bill Battle in the early 60s and had success as a HC at Memphis and failure as an interim HC for NFL's TB. He was Mal Moore's choice. But others overrode him and chose Shula. Neither Shula nor Croom, the 3rd candidate, were remotely qualified to be HCs at the time.

Tom Coughlin, Les Miles and others had expressed interest in the job. TC had publicly stated that he was interested - he had just been fired from Jacksonville.

That no one would take the job has been a myth. The choice of Shula was made by non-football people, except for Ray Perkins, who wanted to exercise control over the program through Shula, who had played for him. Shula sought and heeded Perkins' advice, which ended up being a blessing for Alabama, because it was sometimes stupid, causing Shula to be fired thankfully. He had no business being Alabama's HC. Williamson, Mal's choice, would have been a far superior HC.

He knew Kirby wasn't coming back.
I would rather have DeBoer than the overrated Kirby. My guess is that CKD will own CKS, at least after he gets settled in. He's twice the Xs & Os coach that Kirby is. He's very bright in general, is driven like CNS and Kirby, builds a great football culture, and has far more imagination than Kirby. He will coach circles around CKS.

Kirby's only meaningful advantage is his and UGA's recruiting prowess - yes, I realize that is important, but CKD and Alabama should be able to keep close enough to overcome via strategy, development, scheme, etc. DeBoer is a fabulous in-game coach too, possibly the best in the country.

Big losers in this saga.

You forgot to mention AU and Freeze. They hired CHF to beat Saban. His offenses caused because of misdirection. But though Alabama won't have the talent that they've had under CNS, their schemes or the way they run them or the mental makeup of the personnel will be much less vulnerable to CHF's designs.

Also, IMO, CNS always tightened up a bit in J-H. I would be surprised if CKD will or at least not to the same degree. He specifically focuses on confidence and his teams show it at crunch time. It's one reason why they win so many close games.

He's 12-2 vs ranked teams at the D1 level, in which of his teams were the underdog. He's 7-0 vs Riley (2), Lanning (3) and Sarkisian (2). His second year (first year, the covid year, 3-3) at Fresno, his team went 10-3, beating 2 ranked PAC 12 teams, with a team that was 4-8 the year before he got there.

At his NAIA stop he was 67-3 in 5 years. In his last 4 years he won 3 NCs, going 56-1, the one loss being in the NC game 3 years before he left. This was at a school that had been successful but had won 1 NC in 1996 and has won none since. He was 17-2 in playoff games.
