How important is it that Bama's next HC have Bama ties?

No, I'm NOT saying Coach Saban should retire or is going to retire soon. I'm asking if it's a huge deal that who ever comes after CNS has either played at Bama or has been an assistant at Bama when considering who the next coach is, whenever that is?
Personally, to me, it would be a nice extra but not necessarily a requirement. Winners come in all different shapes and sizes. I don't really care where he comes from as long as he can recruit, coach and teach and is a firm with the players (not a tyrant but not their "buddy" either).
Before anyone scoffs at the idea that some of our fans would insist that the next guy has to be an Alabama guy, there will most definitely be a segment of our fan base that will demand this. Much like when Frank Beamer was on the verge of getting the Bama job, some of the heavy hitters INSISTED that it had to be a Bama guy and we got.....Mike Dubose.
That worked out so well for us.

No need to do the Bryant's Boys thing again.

I just want the best coach and can only think of one or two where we wouldn't have any [or significant] falloff.
If I'm the administration, I would open the checkbook and double the highest paid coach's salary to get that man... even as an individual supporter, I would do the same.
I never want to see Bama go through the Dubose / Price years again. The brand is too important.

Should not be a consideration at all. Go out and hire the best guy for the job. I’m partial to Kalen DeBoer at the moment, if he keeps having success.

I see Deboer as Petersen Part 2, lifelong NW guy who's already making decent money. Don't be surprised if we go after an assistant coach from another program.

quote:Highly unlikely and IMO, a big mistake. Alabama is not a job for those who need on the job training. It must be a HC and preferably from a big time program, if at all possible.

And to answer the OP's question - no, he does not have to have ties to Alabama.

I hear that but other major programs have resorted to hiring assistants or from smaller programs. Many coaches don't want to be the guy to follow after a legend. You're either a good coach or you're not.

I care about the next coach's ties to Bama as much as I care about their hair color, skin color, or hat size.
Not a damn bit.
Not a damn bit.

Not Bama ties, but at least some kind of ties to the southeast where most of our players are recruited from. We all saw the disaster that was Brian Harsin coming down here like a pioneer entering Blackfoot territory.

I hope it is someone with the name "Dan Lanning"

Only bama tie I would even consider is a coach that perhaps coached under BUT had success elsewhere. Dan Lanning for example.

1. Demon at Recruiting. I want a guy that hates how much football games take time away from recruiting
2. NIL Savy
3. Won at a big school or substantially had 1 or more weaker programs punching above their weight class
That’s pretty much it for me. Just don’t say Deion (…………..yet). I was a big Matt Campbell guy 2 years ago so take my thoughts with a grain of salt

I think this is like 30th thread on this topic since last year. Same debate, same arguments.

Not everyone lies in the weeds like a sniper, ready to pounce on someone for something already posted. Give him a break

There’s a lot of good head coaches out there that can surround themselves with good coordinators and assistant coaches.
Can recruit the top talent and coach the maximum potential out that caliber of player.
Create a process and a system to win championships. Saban basically modernized this.
But the most important part of being a head coach at Bama is handling the expectations of the fans and the enormous amount of pressure not just to win games but to win championships!
Myself I have no clue who is the best coach for that job, but it’s got to be a man that’s not thin skinned and extremely determined to take on without a doubt the toughest coaching job in the country.
He will have to devote the better part of his life being the head coach at Bama. But if he’s successful he’ll be well rewarded both financially and go down in history with some of the best coaches to ever coach in all of football.

Just because someone is a good assistant coach doesn't mean he'll be an elite head coach. Mike Dubose, Homer Smith, Derek Mason, and Charlie Strong, for example, were all very good assistant coaches, but not elite head coaches. There aren't that many elite head coaches out there.
Would an elite head coach want to follow Saban? I don't know for sure, but my guess is that those type guys aren't wired like most of us schmucks are. By nature, they have to ooze self confidence. Bordering on arrogance, even. They would see it as as a chance to show that they're the best out there. Plus, the guaranteed money would assure the next coach is set for life.

Why would we care. Best guy available is the only answer

0... but it's 100% important our AD doesn't pawn off some Arizona acquaintance on us.

Overrated.
Any coach who signs a major college contract is set for life even if they don't win a damn game. There are high school coaches (and lower level college coaches) who might not be able to pay the mortgage if they get canned.
Put $10,000,000 in my bank account and I won't give a flying frick what the Finebaum callers have to say.

Point taken, but it’s not the slimbomb callers that will get you runnoft. It’s the one’s pulling the purse strings.
Besides most of the contracts now have performance clauses in them set up to make the big money, unless you’re a proven coach that’s going to have their team in the playoffs pretty much every year. Unless your a&m they got stupid money to burn
