Is there a consensus #2 football program in the SEC, historically?

Obviously Alabama has been the most successful. But who is #2 alltime? Considering alltime wins, championships, consistency, NFL draft picks, and sheer dominance? Georgia, LSU, and Florida all have 3 championships in the last 50 years, but I hear Tennessee has tremendous history

10 years ago, it was Tennessee without question. Right now, it's a discussion between Tennessee/Georgia/LSU
Next year, #2 is Oklahoma
Next year, #2 is Oklahoma

So do the Incas and the Aztecs.

Not anymore.
It was Tennessee about 20 years ago. Now it's a toss up between the VOLS, Tigers, and Dawgs.

consensus, no.
Up until the last decade it was unequivocally Tennessee with zero debate for anyone else. They've pretty much been the SEC's undisputed #2 team for many many decades.
But LSU covered enormous ground from 2003-2019, and ont he back of UGA now winning 2 more national titles the situation is quite muddled. Honestly, you could make a case that has some merit for any of those 3 programs.
It definitely isn't florida though.

UGA and UT are pretty much even with LSU coming in close behind these two.

I agree with others here have said
Tenn fell off the mountain top pretty fast.
UGA, LSU, and UF have all dominated the last 20 years or so and have more or less caught or passed Tenn.

It’s basically Tenner and UGA in a tie for second. In 2020 it was Tenner all alone in second.

UGA has more all-time wins, more SEC titles, and more divisional titles than UT.

If you take the entirety of history into account it might still be us. But I’m afraid it’s Georgia if you are looking at the modern era

It was Tennessee for a LONG time.
In 2001 a shift occured. LSU upset a far superior Tennessee team in the SEC Championship Game. The 2 programs went in complete opposite directions over the last 20 years since.
The next year, UGA then got on the train and has rode side by side with LSU as we both made up TONS of ground on the Vols.
I don't know if either of us has passed Tennessee officially. We may all 3 be battling this out now for awhile since Tennessee seemingly has returned.

Soon to be Oklahoma.
Alabama is #1
Oklahoma is #2
LSU, Georgia, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, and Auburn are 3-8 in that order, but the separation between those six is smaller than the separation between #2 Oklahoma and #3 LSU… and also tighter than the gap between #8 Auburn and #9 Texas A&M.

Yes and it’s not even close when you talk about Historically.
UT- 2nd most SEC wins
UT- 2nd most national titles (6)
UT- 2nd most conference titles (16) 13SEC, 3 Southern.
UT- 3rd most All Time wins(867) UGA(868)
UT- 2nd best all time win %(.672)
UT- Tennessee has won 485 games, the highest home-field total in college football history for any school in the nation at its current home venue.
UT- 5th largest stadium in the country, and 2nd largest in the SEC.

Here’s my subjective and probably biased rankings, as where they stand now based off of the history to this point, with more weight given to more recent success but all history considered:
1. Alabama
2. LSU
3. Georgia
4. Tennessee
5. Florida
6. Auburn
7-13. Everyone else in no particular order
14. Vanderbilt
20 years ago, Tennessee was a clear #2, but they’ve fallen behind LSU and Georgia in that period. I’ve swapped LSU and UGA and out LSU #2, with that subject to change if UGA can threepeat this year.
Auburn and Florida are really close. Auburn was leaps and bounds above Florida before Spurrier got there in 1990. I give Florida the edge because of their three title seasons in 1996, 2006, and 2008. Auburn only has one, 2010, but 1993 and 2004 were undefeated non NC seasons, which have to be the only two SEC teams to go undefeated and not win NCs in the modern era, so it’s really close, but the NCs give UF the edge.
