What's a really subtle recruiting red flag for a high school player?

Not like choking out a coach or being suspended for half of the season, but something less obvious.

Mine is if a recruit is clearly the best player on his high school team and not a team captain. If this happens, stay far away. It might be occasionally different at Grayson or Buford of somewhere player factory, but if there's a player in Pine Tree County in South Georgia and he's not a team captain, abort.

Which blue chip recruit did UGA miss out on that fits this mold?

A smart coach has ties into high school everywhere and you talk to his
Coaches,
Opposing Coaches,
Refs,
Opposing players,
Teachers,
Local police and lawyers
Ministers

Don't forget janitors. Janitors seriously are the real barometer.

A highly ranked OL who weighs less than 270 coming out of HS.

UGA had a ton of those guys under Richt who were 4 and 5 star OL prospects but were underweight. None ever seemed to pan out. Instead guys who came in as 3-stars at 300+ would be the guys starting 3 years later.

Thought that he was too important to be benched for the state title game for not putting his phone away as requested by the coach and found out otherwise. Fortunately, I think it did him some good. Haven't heard of any trouble with him at Ole Miss. Then again, Kiffin can just tell him to frick off and keep feeding Judkins if he gets stupid.

Most guys w/ a really subtle red flag also have a really big one.

I don't know if it is subtle or not, but social media antics before and during recruitment are usually a decent signal of a kid's character.

It is nice how certain athletes just put their head down and work. Even if they don't get the playing time they want and think about the transfer portal, they don't resort to bleating and whining in social media forums.

They never ask us to "respect their decision."

Players that struggle to qualify academically. High school isn’t hard. If you can’t put in the effort to make a 2.5 or whatever it is, it’s likely that you’re not smart enough or too lazy to understand a more complicated college playbook.

Agree on underweight highly rated OL. Alabama has had a few that never could get the mass to compete.

Maybe not a red flag per se but we’ve had an odd trend lately of our very first commit in each class being one of the best recruiters in his class and most outspoken, vocal leaders trying to get others to join him and then they end up transferring after a year
