The Inadvertent Whistle Call Last Night

I was at the game and they didn’t really give any clarification as to what was going on.
What actually occurred? How do you call an inadvertent whistle and a replay of down and then review a play that doesn’t exist?
Genuinely curious if there’s any rules experts around

Call was strange. Nobody seemed to react to an inadvertent whistle.
Was curious if what they really meant was they blew the fumble dead and shouldn’t have.

TV did not shed any light on it either...

Not to derail the thread, but given how that play unfolded, and independent of any subsequent decisions/actions taken by the refs, what do you believe would have been the most fair outcome of that play based upon what the players did before the whistle?

That was my thought but makes no sense why you wouldn’t announce the miscommunication. Especially with all that has happened the past few weeks

No idea. It’s still a mystery. The ref closest to the play blew the whistle and signaled incomplete. Players stopped including the Ole Miss player who could have recovered it.

Fumble by Ole Miss. I’m not here to cry wolf. I understand it was a backwards pass. At least it looked like it in real time.
I’m genuinely just curious because I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Watching on TV didn't bring any clarity either. Nobody knew just what in the hell was going on.

Personal feeling is they knew they fricked up and bought some time about how to handle it.
I would’ve had far more respek for the zebras had they just admitted to both Leach and Lane they messed up. But they doubled down on stupid

as soon as the pass was thrown, the line judge responsible signaled it was a backwards pass. however, another ref blew the play dead as an incomplete pass. at first, they thought the best thing to do was to say no play, play the down over. then they realized the rules provided for this situation, which we have seen before. the correct call was to call it a fumble, and award the ball to the team who picked it up. it was a dead ball as soon as it was picked up.
not going to be fair to either side. no one went for the ball once the whistle had blown. but it was correct.

This is the part I’m curious about. What rule is this?

I seen game literally turned on their ears over inadvertent whistles....and last night they just ignored it happened? WHen did we start doing this?

Dumb & Dumber were officiating the game.

I didn’t even see them approach either Coach but I could be wrong.

Watkins was the closest, ran up to it and just stopped along with the DB that was covering him. Then Jet sort of trots over reaches down and half heartily picks it up.
I would think that given the reaction they would replay the down. It didn’t matter other than wasting precious time because Rogers fumbled and Ole Miss recovered. However even if it had be a redo Wies would have kept calling horrible plays & we would have gone 3 & out.

If they blew the whistle, the play should have been dead and the State player casually picking the ball up would have been worthless.
What was really odd is that they attempted to clarify and state that there was an inadvertent whistle and the down should be replayed. That’s what got everyone fired up and caused the review.
They never showed a replay with field audio so you could hear the whistle.

T
there has been an emphasis to get things right, and the refs are urged that when these "fumbles" happen to let action continue if you weren't sure how to call it. BUT, if the whistle is blown the made they rule that play can continue after the whistle until someone recovers the ball. then it's a dead ball and can't be advanced. this happens pretty regularly - i'm surprised you haven't seen it.

I thought I was called poorly. I don’t know the exact wording of the rule for a ball that isn’t immediately ruled a fumble, but thought it was something along the lines of “immediately recovered”. With the time the ball sat idly on the ground, I thought it should have been called dead.
I feel like when we have seen something similar called, the players act like it’s a fumble and dive in the ball, but they all played it like it was a dead ball.

Yeah, I just rewatched. Everyone played it dead.
