This (or something very similar) has been a project for landscape architecture students at LSU for many, many years. I'm glad this is finally coming to fruition. I would have liked to have seen them go with a more innovative LA firm though.
Will be great if it is kept up. Plants require care. My expectation is that it will be an overgrown mess in 1-2 yrs. Hope I am wrong.

My S is 7 years old. 130k miles. Very little battery degradation. Where in the world are you getting this 8 to 10 number? I should easily get 250k+ miles
Looking online my numbers are probably obsolete as CoPilot says:
quote:
Most modern EV batteries last 8–15 years or 100,000–300,000 miles, with many retaining over 70–80% capacity beyond a decade of use.
Typical Lifespan
EV batteries are generally designed to last 10–15 years under normal use, with real-world data showing many packs still retain 80% of their original capacity after 10–12 years
driveauthority.com

. In moderate climates, lithium-ion batteries can last 15–20 years before reaching 70–80% of their initial capacity
recharged.com
recharged.com
. Mileage-wise, most modern EVs are engineered for 150,000–300,000 miles, depending on battery chemistry, cooling systems, and driving habits
So now we get to the replacement cost (also CoPilot):

Cost of a New Tesla Model S Battery
For a Tesla Model S outside the manufacturer’s warranty, a full battery replacement typically costs about $13,000–$18,000 for an uncomplicated job, with more complex cases reaching $20,000+ Find My Electric. This range covers both the battery pack and labor, and can vary depending on the year, trim, and battery size.
So to my point, nobody is putting that kind of money into a 15yo car. So when batteries go car is worthless and useless...

These are physical skills. Star is position that requires a lot of cerbral work and excellent reaction/decsion skills. That being said I have no idea who is the best person for that job until we see it in action. Spears may be that guy and I do think he has a very good season too.

Is it common to burn through a battery in 10 years?
8-10 was the estimate last I looked a few yrs ago. This is one of the R&D hot buttons in EV business, battery life and cost of change/swap.
If I own a 20 yr old car and it still runs I have some routine costs associated with keeping it running. If i have a 10-20 yr old EV at some point it will cease to charge and then it will be prohibitive to fix it or cheaper to get another one.

This is a huge part of it for me. Power outages, locating charging ports, grid issues, storms, etc. make me hesitant to get one.
I dont see owning an asset that depreciates to a negative number. The secondary market is going to become a big problem. What do you do with a 10-15 year old EV. Nobody is going to want to spend the money on a new battery set for a car this old. The market may get these cars through two battery life cycles but I dont see three. At that point the car is useless and will need to be disposed.

I dont know where you are at but we have a company in Zachary called Apple Notary (no connection to Apple iphones). They do all kinds of DMV outsourcing. I did an Act of Donation to my kids to give them the cars they were driving. Takes about 30 min but you will have to arrange for the recipient to get insurance before they will issue a new plate and submit the registration. I am sure there are many other similar places that can do this without having to go to the DMV.

Economist William Baumol, who developed the theory with William Bowen in the 1960s, famously used the performing arts to explain the concept. It still takes four musicians the same amount of time (and the exact same amount of labor) to play a Beethoven string quartet today as it did in the 19th century, but wages for musicians are much higher.
Pure stupidity. First we are in a capitalist economy so as cost rise so do the incomes of the class structure or the system breaks down.
Second, you cannot assign a value to a job arbitrarily. As I learned from working for Charles Koch the value of anything is set by what someone is willing to pay for it. If there is no demand for string quartets at $1000 but there is at $500 the that is the value.
This is why I get nauseated by the "talking point" of affordability by our illustrious media. It is a fricking trap arguement. Prices are set by demand. If people can pay the price they will and if they cant they will not.
If you cant afford a house because you have a poor income that is not society's fault. Buy what you can afford.
The problem we have now is people are trying to usurp the system by forcing living wage pay on marginal work like fast food jobs and other min wage jobs. When the govt does that the wages of the tiers above them will just rise to keep their station or the business that pays that forced wage will collapse as we are seeing in Cali and the West Coast food industry.

you just need to figure out how long you are going to live. The SS Actuaries have our life expectancy around 84 yrs. The summary draw lines all converge at about 84 for if you start drawing at 62, 67 (FRA), or 70. If you plan on living past 84 you will beat the system by waiting until 70. If you plan on dieing before 84 you beat the system drawing early.
