I had a music playlist on instead of the broadcast talking heads. Did they ever give a lame excuse as to why that obvious safety wasn't called a safety?

"REC's check cleared. RTR" was the official explanation.

Because it wasn't one. This has already been discussed.

The refs botched the play and the penalty so bad they had to go to review…make up an excuse to be able to cover up the egregiousness of their penalty call (excuse was hilarious)…and then didn’t even actually review if it was a safety or not

Pretty incredible piece of officiating

Let's see. Quarterback has football and retreats into his own endzone where he is tackled by the opposing team. Sure as hell sounds like a safety to me.

You did have your tv tuned to FOX network, didn't you?

It was ultimately just an incomplete pass. The officials got it right. Young wasn’t down when he threw the ball, and the ball deflected off a defender. Had it not, there MAY have been a grounding call, but there was even an eligible receiver in the vicinity. That’s really all it amounts to.

I can't believe how many people are showing their football ignorance over that play.

This gets old. You can YouTube the play and see he's down, not once, but twice. First time by lower leg, then again after he rolls over the tackler by his non-throwing arm.

It was a shitty, shitty call. Why some people feel the need to explain it away just fascinates me. In the same way I'm fascinated by an irritating child.

This. In slow motion you could clearly see that he he rolled over the defensive player but never actually was down when he released the ball. In real time you couldn't see that.

It's been 24 hours. Bama says it's time to move on.

Good Lord. This is getting tedious. Its like somebody that wants to debate the meaning of the word "is". Here's a link;

LINK

You can see, at the 1:00 mark, Young be down with his non-throwing arm before he slings the football with no idea of a target. It was a safety. Any non-biased viewer would call it a safety. It takes mounds of arguments and twisted logic to call it something different than a safety. Its the Tuck Rule on roids.

Because once the ball hit the defender's helmet it was considered by rule to be "deflected" and therefore not grounding. It was a lucky break but the right call.

Yes. I went back and looked at the play again and saw that it hit a players head (I think?) I deleted my post hoping nobody had time to respond. Sorry for my confusion. I was not trying to play gotcha, and was asking an honest question.

I can be talked into this one being the right call.

The “missed” face mask at the goal line was very impactful. Not one of those “there’s holding on every play” type of calls. It was brutally obvious.

There is no way his lower leg wasn't down on the other side of the defender.

I am not buying a rule book just to resolve this issue but find the "by rule" because I can't find it. Furthermore have never heard of such and been watching college football probably long than you have been alive.

ETA Maybe y’all are confusing grounding with defensive pass interference once a defensive player touches or deflects a forward pass.
