Can the Aggies explain the fish thing with recruiting?

I’ve seen multiple other prospects posing with fish as well.

" Something smells fishy around here!"

Because you gig a fish? The whole gig em thing always seemed dumb to me.

Maybe they’re used to holding long and lean things in their hands

No you gig a frog. Gig 'em comes from way back in the day when a yell leader was talking about beating TCU's arse at a yell practice.
In most cases at A&M "fish" is just slang for freshman.

Why isn’t he holding up frogs?

No idea. Maybe they are referring to the recruits as big fish that have been caught? It doesn't have anything to do w/gig 'em though.

Down the bayou we catch frogs by hand and gig flounders.

There's also a line out there that "Gig'em" was/is also used to indicate a demerit on an inspection in the Corps, ie, one guy was doing the inspecting and asking a note taker to record the infraction.
Could be that this usage came after the TCU thing, and the term was just a general "Get him" kind of thing.
Could be that this is completely made up. The origins of some of the traditions have gotten somewhat opaque over the years.

A sign that the program will be swimming with the fishes soon? I think it’s a Sicilian message.

Damn. Not everything has to be a tradition or have a hidden meaning. A&M overkills on the traditions.
There was a joke someone said when A&M first came to the SEC...If you fart twice at Kyle Field A&M will call it a tradition.
And damn it if they weren't right.

They just have a box full of props, kids like the fishes, I figured it was just bc their coach is Fisher? Who knows, has the same special meaning as the Milwaukee Chainsaw lol
