I'm sure SoG has some good points. I haven't watched Alabama much this year, but if you shoot a lot of 3's, then you must do it at a good rate. I think you guys may be underestimating the importance of this.
Past Arkansas teams have a lot of history with this, unfortunately. And like with this Alabama team, it resulted in Arkansas upsetting some teams, while getting upset by others.
Oats is a good coach and I've said that on here many times, but I think he may rely on the 3 more than he should.

Four major issues:
1. Turnovers
2.Sketchy defense.
3. Turnovers
4. Sketchy defense.

It all fell apart after one man was denied a handshake.

What has honestly happened with this poster?
The ability to write decent posts is there on paper, but instead all of his posts are weird off season posts and pot stirring.

This year's Auburn team could be a real contender, but Auburn's basketball history is mostly a dumpster fire (Barkley is the exception, not the rule).

I’m not saying the 3pt shooting is their biggest issue. it does seem like defense is a bigger one but you can’t have watched them much this year and not seen times when the amount of 3 point attempts really hurt them. Oats has a good offensive system but no system is perfect and it has to have a weakness somewhere. The volume of 3pt attempts is undoubtedly the occasional flaw of his.

We don't play defense this year.

Amount of 3 point shots is not the issue. Of course, better if you make more but that's true of every facet of the game.
The offensive problem has been far too many live ball turnovers leading directly to runouts.
The real problem with this team is almost all on the defensive end. Nimari Burnett missed the season with an injury and I believe it was a surprise that Primo exploded into a first round NBA pick and left. Those were really the replacements for Petty/Jones in terms of having a lengthy athletic defenders.
That's meant at least 2 and often all 3 of Quinnerly, Davison and Shackleford have been playing together and they just can't keep opposing guards from penetrating.
If you watch the losses, runs of scoring on 9-10 possessions where oppositions guards just getting wherever they want has been the main issue.

IMO everything SoG said is correct (and the list is long), but I think it can be summarized by poor, inconsistent guard play and lack of a Herb/Petty defensive combo (Petty matched on a primary scorer and Herb roaming to clean up garbage).
I think the other big thing that hurts the Tide is the lack of a dominant big man, interior offense/defense is somewhat lacking putting even more pressure on perimeter offense to produve

quote:Saw that in the 2nd LSU game, too. I think in the second half they scored only on 3's and FTs for most of the half.

It does seem to be an issue at times though. My rationale though is acknowledging when it’s not your night and leaning into driving the lane for baskets instead. I know they just kept shooting in that first game with us
If you make them, great, you pull ahead or make up ground. But if you go cold, just a bunch of empty possessions.
Sure, the LSU game was close (went to OT), but if LSU doesn't have 30 fouls they win comfortably

Key word, on paper.
JD Davidson has all-world athleticism, but he's a little bitch mentally
And even with all the athleticism possible, you still won't need good enough at this level if you don't develop your fundamental skills, have a low basketball IQ, or can't play AS A TEAM
This is Oates fatal flaw as a coach, and the SEC is starting to make it shine through like a spotlight. I'll give him 3 more seasons, max, and that's just on the good grace of last season

What happened? "The handshake" happened. All downhill from there. Kids didn't want to play for such a loser.

It's simple: we don't take care of the ball and we don't play defense consistently. When we play defense well for most of the game we usually win. But these guys have trouble staying focused for 40 minutes so double digit leads continue to evaporate. It's frustrating to say the least. Makes me think a couple of upperclassmen need to move on.

I really won't be shocked when Vanderbilt wins tonight.

fricking Auburn fans that started watching basketball 3 years ago but they’re experts now. Bama went 16-2 in the league last year and won the regular season and the tourney. They did it without a viable big man. That is literally impossible without playing AS A TEAM in this league. Team cohesion put into practice shows on the defensive end, where Bama was stifling last year when they had 6’5”-6’8” perimeter defenders and not 6’0”-6’2” perimeter defenders. They can’t switch this year because they just aren’t good enough.
The system is fine. They finished with a better league record a year ago than Auburn did this year, and we know how highly you think of this auburn team.

Player usage and rotations are terrible. JD is horrendous defensively and a liability as an offensive player. Yet Oats plays him as the primary ball handler. Meanwhile the real five star sits the bench because Oats has no clue how to use him.
