He steadily improved Ole Miss until his last year.
Then he went 5-7. What happened that last year? Was the scandal coming out at that point or what?

Im sure it was the looming scandal and not having the studs he had in previous years

Im sure players and coaches fed off the energy.
Anyway, who cares? 16 team CFP will be here as soon as next year and he's 5-2 in the post season.( kiffins 2-3)
The presser gives me confidence. SEC titles will soon be irrelevant in the grand scheme of $$, which is what will keep the options for talent that buys into the system.

They had the least amount of returning starters in the SEC. A rebuilding year for sure.

The NCAA was stationed in Oxford for basically the entire season.

And it’s Ole Miss. As much as they’d like to believe they can be a top tier program, they will always struggle to maintain consistency. Houston Nutt went 9-4 his first two years and then followed up with a 4-8 season.

Houston's Lawsuit happened and details were coming out. Many distractions that year also they took a huge hit from the draft the year before if I remember correctly.

You shouldn’t fall off a cliff in year 5. I don’t care what you’re rebuilding from.
Scandal looming is the only somewhat excuse I’ll take. I didn’t remember it being mid-season but maybe it was.

Their offensive talent then was orgasmic. Their defense was trash.

Why do I care if our new coach fell off a cliff in his 5th year at his last major program? Is that a serious question?

You care about this but him not going 5-7

The thing about a smooth talking charlatan is eventually everyone sees through the facade.

ETA; that’s what happens, but he deserves a second chance, it’s been 6yrs with nothing else like that shitshow.

Our recruiting class…

Pretty sure the recruiting scandal was out then. They had lost Tunsil to the draft which was Feb of 2016, and thats really when the NCAA turned up the heat.
Their run defense was atrocious. I remember Pettway and Kerryon going off in our game with them. Their best receiver that year was the TE Evan Engram. DK Metcalf was on that team, but he was a freshman and I don't think anyone knew what a freak he would turn out to be. And the headcase Swag Kelly was their QB.
They got beat by #4 FSU to open the season, got beat by #1 Bama a couple weeks later. Actually beat Georgia who was top 15 at the time and fell apart after losing 3 straight capped off by the Auburn loss. State destroyed them in the Egg Bowl to end the year after it had already come off the rails. Seemed like it was a perfect storm of shite that season for them.

Reminds me of Dye's last two years.
The Eric Ramsey story broke the same morning Auburn was playing Tennessee in 1991.
Auburn got their arse handed to them that day and lost to So. Miss the next week. The whole program suffered under the weight of impending NCAA doom for two years.
It was an awful time.
