This team might be the worst shooting team I’ve ever seen that’s actually really good.

Kind of a bizarre squad and I’m sure we register as something of a statistical anomaly in some ways. Grit and determination and effort gets you a long ways.
Boats loads of Tenacious'D. . . kinda like the football team.

We miss 50% of dunks, foul shots, and lay ups, and yet we are a very good basketball team.

I guess effort, defense and rebounding still wins a ton of games.

+17 in rebounding last night.

That’s dominating.

If turnovers get cleaned up and shooting improves a little,.......

The SEC's poor OOC performance is hammering everyone in the conference, meanwhile, we're ranked behind 10 loss Big 10 teams. That think is obviously flawed. We would be 10th in the Big 10 according to that.

Kenpom is based primarily on offensive and defensive efficiency. It's usually a good predictor. However, it completely ignores wins and losses, so when you have a team that wins in a statistically unusual and inefficient way, kenpom will rank that team lower than the record indicates is reasonable.

Auburn is unique in that it is winning game with volume free throw attempts and tremendous offensive rebounding. It isn't particular good in any other offensive or defensive metric.

The easy way to view Kenpom is to imagine winning being against the spread not game outcome

So if Auburn is favored by 10, winning by less than 10 is underperforming

So for example, beating Vandy by only 4 at home dropped us from #11 to 17 as we were favored by double digits

Very much this.

It's not that Kenpom isn't a good metric. It is. It just doesn't really apply well to this Auburn team.

Kenpom isn’t a ranking/resume tool... it’s intended to be used in matchups.

As kenpom sees it, we couldn’t easily lost any of our last three games (trailed in the 2nd half in all three... two by double digits).

No, it's a really shitty metric for any Bruce Pearl coached team. Needs to be brought up to these hack wannabe statistician writers. It's been proven throughout his whole career. When any writer slights a Pearl coached team because of some stupid website's efficiency stats, they're basically trying to tell us that his defense sucks. You can go back and look at every year.

KenPom had us in the top 25 last year basically the entire season, even when we fell way out of the AP Poll.

Not talking about overall, but overall his teams have been well below where they should have been. Defensive efficiency is not a good Bruce Pearl metric, and if you don't make our defense a factor, it doesn't give a good picture at all.

Not really. Plenty of examples of Pearl teams underperforming W/L vs KenPom ranking

2019: AU 16-8 ranked #17
2018: AU 25-7 ranekd #16 after losing SECT

2009 TN 21-13 ranked #32
2006 TN 22-8 ranked #17
2005 Milwaukee 26-6 #36
2004 Milwaukee 20-11 #62

Lowest KenPom ranking was 18 when 13-6

Fun fact

In the past three seasons, we have only 3 home losses by a combined 8 pts

In Bruce's tenure I think it is only 18 L at home vs some 74 total L
