I think yall are underestimating what “lower rated” high school recruits think of themselves. They all still think that they’re gonna make it big… they’ll optimize their profitability just like everyone else is.

I don’t blame them, that’s the system… no one is hanging around for yrs for little or no money to get “developed”.

You're not wrong, but high school recruiting services have already done the rating work.

Theoretically you could point to that and say "this is what you get in payment and development if you stick around", but to your point I think a third of all D-1 players entered the portal this go around.

What I would really love to be able to see is where every single portal entrant ended -> especially if they left a D1 program and ended up having to go down a division.

The issue now for HS kids is they have to compete with college players in the portal that have experience and shown themselves on a college level.

If things stay how they are now then HS kids will be viewed below transfers and they will have to sign somewhere lower to prove themselves and then jump in the portal.

Instead of building up for certain years every year will be rebuilding years for everyone and championship teams will be bought from the portal each year.

Thats not true. lets look at the last 2 NC outside Indiana. Mich was a senior laden team built from HS, OSU was not filled with transfers but built through top 3 HS recruting classes.

Cant be a new standard if it only happened once with Indiana, Golesh said he wants to build the team through HS recruiting. Until he says otherwise thats still the plan for us.

If we still want to rebuild through highschool how exactly do we prevent schools who are willing to spend more (Ole Miss) (LSU) (Texas schools) and (Oregon) from sliding in and taking the fruits of our labor? We clearly plan on spending for Basketball and Baseball still while other schools could give a damn freeing up even more cash for Football. How do we develop and keep our best HS recruits? If we use family, sunshine, and lollipops we will absolutely destroyed in this landscape. Hope we have a better plan.

Those were also very early in the transfer era before Indiana showed a different way. i'm not going as far to say it will be the new normal but more and more teams will start following it and if it continues to show improvement then...

OSU won with a Senior transfer QB from Kansas State. They weren't filled with transfers, but the most important player on the field was a transfer.

And as mentioned above, you are referencing to teams that won during the 'transitionary' period before the Portal blew up.

Take a look at Ohio State's number of Portal additions per year:

2022: 2
2023: 9
2024: 8
2025: 10
2026: 16

So even schools like OSU (one of your examples) have been forced to gradually increase their usage of the Portal year over year. And you are seeing young 4 and 5-star HS signees from their roster leaving after 1-2 years (like the WR that visited us and ended up transferring to Notre Dame). Even OSU can't just keep everyone on their roster happy 24/7 under the current climate. They had 32 players transfer OUT in this current 2026 class.

The teams that are strong/competitive year over year will likely normalize into that 15-20 transfers-in per year range. Building through HS will still be important, but what Indiana has shown is that you need to go Portal heavy early in your tenure to establish the program, and then you can start shifting towards leaning on developing HS players once you have established a winning culture that will enticed those players to stay on instead of leaving. What Hugh Freeze tried to do was retarded: nobody has time to wait 3-4 years for a team full of HS players to mature. and those HS players aren't going to sit around for 3-4 years of losing football either.

It sure can we are just really starting to hit stride with the transfer portal.

Total Football Players in Transfer Portal (Approximate by Cycle)
2025-26: 10,500+ (all divisions)
2022-23: 9,420 (Total, all divisions)
2021-22: 8,135 (Total, all divisions)
2020-21: 6,191 (Total, all divisions)
2019-20: 4,752 (Total, all divisions)

The growth in the number of players in the portal by over 2,000 from the two seasons prior to this one speaks to effect of NIL. The nearly doubling of the numbers from 2020-2021 to the 2025-2026 means comparing the effects of the portal is like comparing apples to oranges. Its a completely different game.

I think that has already happened. The portal window signings this year was a much bigger story than NSD.

Mizzou must’ve found out he runs a 4 minute 40.

They signed another WR. I guess they told him they weren't but did so he didn't show up to class nor anything. So Mizzou released him...

In a weird way though HS recruiting is going to still be super important to build relationships and comfort with a program. Transfers have a relatively short window to build relationships/visit programs, having a strong relationship from HS recruiting should help a staff get the early jump at a transfer

Golesh kind of alluded to that in past interviews
