I think what we saw was that he is not the runner some of us wanted him to be. I wanted him to run the read with Boobie but watching him today, I dont think that was a good idea. He doesnt seem to have a lot of speed and he seems somewhat clumsy. He threw some nice short passes but I dont think they coaching staff there has any confidence in him throwing the ball over 5 yards at all. They basically sat on the ball at the end of the game not making an attempt to score.

Its not a great game to evaluate him over but it did not seem like he was what some of us wanted him to be

If you are evaluating both those guys in there first real game, you have to say Nix way out performed him. Joey may get more comfortable as he gets playing time.

I remember Gus' condition on Gatewood's transfer to Kentucky was that he would not play against Auburn. Why was Gus scared of such a sucky QB? Gus is a Machiavellian mastermind! He convinced Stoops that Gatewood was great, so that he would take him off his hands, and sold it by requiring that he wouldn't use him against us! I'm beginning to think the backward spike was planned, and used as another psychological dagger for future opponents. That, and the secret weapons we have on the bench at QB! Cord Sandberg and Grant Loy are going to be unleashed when our opponents least expect it!

Don't you think its easier to just look at the stats from Gatewood playing the game than spinning some Shakesperian story of deceit and treachery that exists only in your head?

Gatewood was awful. Would have been a good, not great TE.

Do you really believe this or was this just some internet talking point. Seemed the SEC made all interconference transfers sit out the 1st week.

Agree, but its just silly. If Gus doesn't lose his team(s) like Chizik, and wins an average of 8-9 games he's going to be at AU. Also, I've found that I've improved over more years of doing the same job. I don't think it would be unusual for Gus to improve.

On a separate note and one that should fall squarely on Gus is his negligence with the OL. That alone to me was a fireable offense. I knew Stidhams JR year if we didn’t get a lot better going forward we were going to have rough days ahead. That was Braden Smiths SR year and the right side of the OL was shite. We can argue QB this and that but if you don’t have an OL you don’t have anything.

I’ve said many times there and I’ll give him credit Gus has been a far more stable coach than Chizik. I haven’t heard the crazy bullshite going on at our program like I did under Chizik. To me that’s why the players haven’t given up. This year they could have given up especially after the UGA game but they haven’t.

Gatewood was 60% and Nix was 52% vs same team.

Did you watch the game? Gatewood may have thrown one ball more than 10 yards all game. The game was on the line and they needed to score ASAP and they refused to throw downfield.

The incessant comparing of these two guys is kind of dumb at this point anyway.

Im not going to get in a war of stats but its much easier to complete passes when the longest pass you make is 11 yards.

Screen passes are typically easy.

It's his first start ever. He plays for Kentucky. He's playing against a top 5 defense. He'll be fine. Kid's a winner. I just hope he doesn't spike the ball backwards.

He's a winner? based on what?

And to compare how Bo handles a pocket against Gatewood? Where did you get that a QB who is calm in the pocket, but throws tentative, doesn't throw down field, or for now is not a better runner out of the pocket than BO, makes him better than Bo.

I wanted the KY game, and although I want Gatewood to do well, he did nothing to show he has better QB skills than Bo.

And as you said, I realize it's against GA, so lets see him progress against lighter competition.

But to take what we see so far, doesn't show that Gus and company did anything wrong in picking Nix as our starter...

Gatewood is at 46% and sitting the bench at Kentucky. If he lasts after the present two quarterbacks at Kentucky ....Gatewood will still be sitting on the bench next year as well....There is a logical reason behind that.

It's called ...."I can't play with the big boys and measure up."

Nix has some issues but the common denominator is the coach. No one knows why Gus got away from a true DT QB.

Nix is clearly at least average. He’s not going to win you games by himself but he can certainly be a QB on a good team

The real best QB we had currently takes snaps at Liberty.
