Wouldn't a defensive minded coach have a good defense? There's nothing about Bret Bielema's "bend, and also break" defense that even remotely resembles a defensive minded coach.
Arkansas had a good defense in 2014 and 2015. Our record those years? 6-6, 7-5. According to BoarEd this is "winning" at Arkansas.
It's proof that we just need a defensive minded coach to win.

Yeah, everyone who doesn't win a natty are automatically losers. I guess those 2010 and 2011 teams were losers in your eyes?
I said they were great seasons, just a few posts ago. We can't have a discussion if you insist on putting words in my mouth.
2010 and 2011 in my opinion were the pinnacle of what can be expected with that philosophy. Were we in the Big 12 or the PAC 12, we probably would have played for national championships both years. We probably would have lost, but we would have been in the game at least one of those years. But we aren't in the Big 12 or the PAC 12, we're in the SEC, so they were good for tied for second and third respectively, in our division.
First, I think it's a little delusional to think that Gus, or Leach, or Kiffin, or anyone else could come here and have that type of success. None of them are the kind of coach, or playcaller that Petrino was when he was here.
Second, even if they were, it's not the philosophy that can win the SEC as long as defensive talent found in places like Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, and even in Mississippi, is utilized to it's potential.

which you act like an offensive minded coach can't do.
When did I ever say that?
I gather you're a lawyer. Am I right? I hope you don't argue in court with absolute statements as often as you do here. You put words in people's mouths all the time and often make patently false statements.

This argument is going to have zero direction for who we actually end up with.
Ya'll fully comprehend that I hope.

But just like you can't paint the entirety of Arkansas football with the same brush Bielema used, you can't paint it with the brush Malzahn uses. There is no guarantee that Malzahn's system would work here, just like it's obvious that Bielema's didn't work here.
Malzahn being good at Auburn =\= Malzahn would be good at Arkansas.
What's it like having zero self awareness?

I also said "act like", which is much different than "you said"
I guess it is ok for you to put words in my mouth though.
Chill out, this whole coaching search has got you worked up when you have no control.

So your plan is to have a consistently better defense than Bama, LSU, Auburn, etc.? You can't be serious.

Nah, once this topic reaches 10 pages GOBN will review and select the coach who the best argument was made for

I'm guessing blissful.
If we got with Venebles, I can almost promise it was because something fell through with offensive minded HEAD COACHES.
I think most would agree.
Venebles is just a safe bet that most people won't complain about too much. His ceiling is very low and has Bert 2.0 written all over him minus the fat part.

Arkansas had a good defense in 2014. 10th in the nation, good for 2nd in the SEC. That defense still gave up 45 to Auburn, 35 to aTm, and 45 to Georgia.
The 2015 Arkansas defense was 58th in the nation, 10th in the SEC. Not good by anyone's stretch of the imagination.

People would be kidding themselves if they believed that fan reaction isn't used to shape administrative decisions.

Weird. So with a worse defense and a better offensive coordinator, we actually won more games? Crazy!

All I'm saying is that our discussions on here may have more influence than we believe. A week ago I wasn't hearing Venables name on sports talk radio at all. Yet when I ran down to the store half hour ago I heard three calls on the radio of people voicing their desire to have him as our coach.
A lot of those people are reading stuff on the internet about these coaches and taking it to the airwaves.
I also heard a few calls for Norvell.

The thing about Venables that I believe differentiates him from other "defensive-minded" coaches is that he has coached with some pretty remarkable offensive coaches: Mike Leach, Mark Mangino, Kevin Wilson, Kevin Sumlin, Josh Heupel, and Chad Morris.
I have no clue as to what type of offensive system he prefers, but I can only assume that it would be something similar to what the guys listed above run.

I imagine it would be very much the same. After all, it's been those combinations they've used to win titles.
Why would someone change something up that obviously works?
But these guys act like he wouldn't hire a good OC and he would be the Arkansas version of Will Muschamp despite all evidence to the contrary.

Why don't you do a little research before making statements? Are you just lazy? In 2014 we played 6 top 10 opponents, and 8 ranked opponents total. In 2015, we played 2 top 10 opponents, and 4 ranked opponents total. So, if we didn't have that top 10 defense in 2014, it would have looked a lot like 2017. Not to mention, we're talking about a one game difference here.
2014 was the breakout year for Bielema's philosophy. Our offense was part of our defense. Ball control, smash mouth. It was also the year Pittman quit on the job.

I know, right?
Even then I don't know it would necessarily be a bad thing. Muschamp is pretty good.
