I think there is one of two things going on there.

1) teams have figured out that if you just play nickle defense the entire time you can beat Petrino.

Or

2) there are serious problems in Louisville. Bigger than we know. Which wouldn't surprise me a bit.

Either way, Petrino has been exposed.

Venables we know the defense( with OU and Clemson talent)

This isn't quite correct. What are Clemson's average recruiting classes? What were they BEFORE Venables got there?

Clemson gets that talent BECAUSE OF Venables. Because he's the goddamn best defensive mind in college football and kids want to play for him. And also because he is recognized as one of the 25 best recruiters in the country.

So really all you "spelled out" for me is that Norvell is a head coach. Thanks.

We aren't going to win it all in the first place so I'm not sure why we're even discussing it

And if this statement is only mostly true, it puts Venables squarely in the mold of one Nicholas Lou Saban Jr.

Well hell, if all you strive to be is a competent looking loser, what difference does the head coach make? College football is littered with coaches who won't embarrass the university to the point that he must be fired. Hooten Dale will probably take the job. Call him up.

It's absolutely true. Traditionally speaking Clemson is on par with Arkansas. It makes what they're doing there all the more impressive.

Before that they were building championships at Oklahoma. And while Oklahoma is pretty rich in tradition, it certainly has little to nothing to do with proximity to players.

If Arkansas was smarter about their football hires they could have the exact same success Oklahoma has.

But we are too interested in putting golfing buddies in the coach's office to try and contend for titles it seems.

BoarEd is trolling. His example that a defensive minded coach can win at Arkansas is Bret Bielema.

When you said Bielema proved his philosophy can win at Arkansas, what did you mean by that?

Hear hear!
We should have hired Venables (my preference of course) the day after they fired Bielema.

Since you're still ignoring your absolutely ridiculous statement, I'll continue to spell this out for you since you have trouble with reality.

Your example that a defensive minded coach can win in the SEC is Will Muschamp at Florida. He averaged 7 wins per year in a weak division during his tenure.

Compare that to Malzahn's offensive approach at Auburn. He's currently averaging 9 wins per year in a much tougher division. How can you look at this empirical evidence and still arrive at your conclusion? The answer is cognitive dissonance. You are rejecting reality because it conflicts with your own objectively wrong opinion. Hope that helps!

Yeah, everyone who doesn't win a natty are automatically losers. I guess those 2010 and 2011 teams were losers in your eyes?

I don't know what it is all or nothing with you and BoarEd. The next coach at Arkansas won't win the NC no matter who we pick. It is ok to say that.

Wouldn't a defensive minded coach have a good defense? There's nothing about Bret Bielema's "bend, and also break" defense that even remotely resembles a defensive minded coach.

The part of Bielema's philosophy that did have some success in the SEC was pro-style, smash mouth football, with behemoth, road-grader offensive linemen, who could also pass block. Which is why Pittman quitting a year before he left was Bielema's downfall.

Look at the majority of our recruiting area and do a check on 247... Out of all of the 4 and 5 star players in Dallas Metro, LA, and Arkansas.. how many are offensive, how many are defensive?

Venables is a heck of a coach, I will give you that. But I want to offer something else as well. Even Saban has went away from "his" style of football in the past 3 years. Because of OC's like Kiffen, etc. and it has gotten them to be a better team overall.

But, let me ask this one very important question... What brand of football puts more butts in the seats? ok, another... What brand of football sells more shirts, hats, jackets, etc? One more... where does the money come from?

We will hire, if possible, the brand of football that sells period. If that means 8 wins a year average, that is what it will be for a certain period of time.

I like venables, the more I look him up and learn... I still would rather be entertained. trolling a bit with the last sentence.

Auburn has one of the best defenses in football. Try again, ankle biter.

ETA: and let me go ahead and say for the record that Gus Malzahn is a great coach. That doesn't mean I want him to coach here, though. He is toxic. And I think he is a scumbag. But nobody can deny that he can coach.

But just like you can't paint the entirety of Arkansas football with the same brush Bielema used, you can't paint it with the brush Malzahn uses. There is no guarantee that Malzahn's system would work here, just like it's obvious that Bielema's didn't work here.

Malzahn being good at Auburn =\= Malzahn would be good at Arkansas.

Plus he ain't gonna get the job anyways.

Because he hired a good D coordinator, which you act like an offensive minded coach can't do.

Damn dude, you are a cherry picking fool! Has he had one of the best defenses his entire career at Auburn? Because I mentioned his tenure at Auburn, not just 2017. Why are you avoiding the rest of the post? You must be trolling at this point, no one could be this bad at debate.
