No. I would be interested to hear a serious take on the question.

You say that but even on the legit remarks. You find the questions are "easy".

OR they run teams that don't field a defense at all and try to score 100 points to beat other teams. Like at Memphis.

I said in the OP that my answer was easy.

Public discourse is a good thing.

Judging by the responses so far, I think some of our fans need to be informed that we are in the Southeastern conference, Western division. An elite offense with a mediocre defense would be dandy in the Big 12, or PAC-12, not the SEC.

Petrino seems to be the standard, and I don't understand why. In 2010 we lost to #1 Alabama, #7 Auburn, and #6 Ohio State, with wins against #18 South Carolina, and #6 LSU, tied for 2nd in our division.

In 2011, we lost to #3 Alabama, and #1 LSU, with wins against #14 aTm, #15 Auburn, #10 South Carolina, and #10 Kansas State, 3rd in our division.

Certainly respectable, even great seasons, but that is about the pinnacle of what we can hope to achieve with an elite offense, and a half-assed defense in the SEC.

Edit to add: the answer for our situation is Venables, and it isn't close.

Agreed.

Teams don't win championships without elite defenses. Especially in the SEC.

I mean I think its great that the ultimate goal is a NC but people would take Petrino results in a heartbeat.

They would be accepting mediocrity and it quickly wouldn't be good enough.

Losing to Alabama year after year would have eventually done Petrino in too.

Look at A&M. Perfect example of a team that sells the farm for a great offense. Never does shite with it. Cost their coach his job.

Defense wins in the SEC.

Sure, would have been a while though. But it wouldn't just be the Bama games.

How would it be anything other than accepting mediocrity if you are knowingly hamstringing your ability to win your conference championship?

Do you not think a team should strive to be the best it possibly can?

Sure, while also being realistic. Which you haven't been lately.

Who's gonna be his staff? What kind of offense will he run?

This isn't the place for on the job training.

How have I not been realistic? You don't think we could hire Venables? I do.

I imagine those would be questions asked during the interview process. But if I hear anything I'll pass it along.

Overall? No, you think Petrino was mediocre. You live in a unrealistic world if you believe that.

Sure but you are making all these jumps in logic because he is a defensive first guy.

No I'm not. I don't labor under some delusion that he would build and Alabama-esque program here. I just think he's the best chance at something like that that is available to us.

I think he is head and shoulders a better candidate than Norvell.

So, everything is championship or bust to you, right? Everything but a championship is mediocre?

Only if you knowingly set yourself up in a manner that all but excludes you from having a chance at one. That is "settling". And I don't want to see the Hogs EVER settle for less than the best.

Well sure, but Petrino isn't coming back to Arkansas, and has done no better than 2nd in the ACC in his second stint as the Louisville coach. I don't think he's won 10 games in any of the 4 years he's been back, even with Florida State crapping out this year.

Spell this out for you.

Head coaching experience is more valuable than DC experience. Norvell even has limited experience but at least he has some. With Norvell we know what offense we’re getting and an idea of the defense with the bonus of limited program management experience.

Venables we know the defense( with OU and Clemson talent) we are getting and not a clue as to the type of offense. Plus the variables of not being a HC yet and learning from the get go.

And if the last 15 years has taught us anything, winning the SEC gives you a pretty good shot at winning it all. So tell me again why having a mediocre defense is acceptable?
