Why do people act like Gus hasn't already schemed an offense around an Arkansas roster before?

Here's a hint: We were playing in Atlanta at the end of the year.

Oh, I'm totally cool with hiring him as our OC.

The west was so different than what it is today. That was over 10 years ago.

Similarly, Auburn went 8-5 in 2011, he leaves and they fall off a cliff to 3-9/0-8, and they jump back up to 12 wins and an SEC Championship his first year back.

Sure but we all know Gus runs a unique system. The reason for the big fall off was mainly due to Chizik trying to install a different offense and having all the wrong system players. I'm not going to try and downplay what he did his first year, it was very good.

I'd be curious to see how many people offering to throw their bodies in front of hiring Gus would take Petrino back or have said on prior occasions that firing him was the wrong move.

This is odd, I'm meh on Gus but it has nothing to do with anything off the field. I don't want Petrino back either.

Gus to Arkansas and Petrino to Auburn would add a little something to that game.
Don't think both will happen, Gus to Arkansas is the better bet probably, and the odds are less than 50%, I think.

The counter to that is that he's essentially on 1 year contracts (figuratively), and he reportedly hates that.

It's a gamble on his part to stay at AU for sure, but he's trying to use Arkansas as an antethesis to AU by demanding a massive, long-term contract. He wants $6.5mm per year over 6 years GUARANTEED, nearly $40mm of our money whether he wins or fails miserably.

The above plus the fact that he reportedly hates being on the hotseat tells me that he's only looking to come here so he can rest on his laurels back in his home state where he doesn't have to win that much, is guaranteed payment, and will always have diehard fans regardless of results. To put it shortly, he thinks it's an easier job.

I think we should pass on him this go-round and hire an up and comer. Let Gus' time at AU run its course and let him feast or famine there. If he keeps winning he'll still be there in 3-5 years from now, if he loses enough to get fired he'll most likely land somewhere lower on the totem pole than Arkansas. If our up and comer doesn't work out in 3-5 years we're either in the same boat and looking at hiring him away from AU or hiring him away from that lower-tiered program.

It's a win/win for Arkansas which is the way it should be, a coach shouldn't hold the leverage over the program the way he's attempting to. I'd probably be a little more comfortable with him in a few more years anyway, in his case I think AU firing him would cause him to make some much needed changes and self-evaluation and the more time that's passed since his time here the more fans will forgive and forget. THIS should be the plan amongst the PTB, just seems like the smart play that also tells GM that he will not be the one that holds the cards, UofA will.

David Lee came in and improved the offense in every area they following year, so we should hire him instead?
Sure, Dale. You go ahead and hire that 5 loss coordinator. You and Rev can be the cheer section for that team. I'll be over here with the people that aren't holding grudges like 16 year old high school girls.

If it were anyone other than Gus our entire fanbase would be losing their shite that we could reel in a coach that's been to two national title games since we've even sniffed the SEC championship.

Meh, I don’t necessarily agree.

There’s a difference between wanting to go to a school where winning 8 or 9 wins doesn’t get you fired and “resting on your laurels.”

It’s not a stretch to say it’s not unreasonable for him —or any coach for that matter — to want to get away from somewhere where you’re impossibly measured against the premier program and coach in college football.

Gus will always have Gus fans win or lose.

Hiring him will fracture the fan base, imo

First 6 win season the torches and pitchforks will be out in force.

I won't argue with you because neither of us have a way to prove it. Just remember my post when it becomes public knowledge and legitimate sources are reporting as much.

Sexton is obviously a master at negotiating these things and is naturally aiming high in the beginning. Final numbers would probably look closer to those in the OP, which is still $6mm per year plus incentives.

I got bored waiting for the wife to come home and went over to HV. I see that they have a sticky from Porkatarian saying that our top 3 are Malzahn, Norvell and Leach. I’m not as high on Leach as a lot of you guys but I can appreciate the amount of sailing that would get to be done with that hire.

Naturally this means that we will hire Seth Littrell.

Porkatarian out...

Lol..yep...my problem with his is based on a school aged grudge. Dude... I have rarely disagreed with you...makes the board more interesting at least.

I don't care much for the man at all..nor as a coach. But..i definitely support my razorbacks and want to win. If he comes..i hope he proves me wrong on many levels. If not..i will have to laugh just a tad. Lol

I can prove it, but I'm not going to do that. Trust me, it's not about money. A slight pay raise from Auburn will suffice. He wants support from upper management and directors, something he doesn't get from Auburn because of Nick Saban and Bama.

Not so much you, cmon Rev. You've explained your reasoning in great detail. I just threw your name in there because you're basically the poster-boy for the anti-gus crowd on this board now.
