I’m wondering if we can use him in other situations. Briles has clearly been drooling over using him since he’s been on campus considering he’s had packages for him since his first year when Felipe was qb.

He really committed to that joke

The hell are you smoking? He has elite speed.
The thing that has always separated Arkansas from the rest of the pack is that we lack speed at the important positions.
Malik has a lot to learn but he has plenty of time to learn it yet

Pittman is flirting with a "you recruit your own problems" quote with two entering the portal and being allowed to stay after proclaiming entering the portal ends your time with Arkansas.
I don't really care, just not a fan of absolute statements that you knew you'll walk back on in certain situations.
Kinda like telling commits if they take other visits they lose their offers.

I think we see Hornsby involved in several trick plays at the least next year, at the most we move him to WR permanently and play to his strength - his speed.
If I were a coach on the Arkansas staff trying to convince him to stay, I'm selling him on a unique role where he can play just about every skill position on offense and still be a passing threat. Line him up in the slot and run an RPO where KJ tosses it or hands it off to him coming around the back end, and depending on the LBs and safeties he either takes off around the edge like a screen or passes it to a WR downfield. Then he can line up in the slot in the exact same alignment, shift around the back end to the opposite hash like they're running the same play, and take off on a go route at the snap and burn everyone.
He could be used out wide or in the slot, lined up at QB and used like a wildcat QB, even set up in the backfield like an RB with the potential to pass or run. He should be used like the versatile tool he is, and this is what I would've sold him on to convince him to come back. I'm sure Pittman and Briles were telling him the same.
With Burks gone we needed a new wrinkle that keeps opposing defenses guessing, and he's got elite speed and experience at QB. It's not the same kind of threat as Burks, but could add a unique threat to this offense.

Your woman flirts w another man, you going to take her back when she doesn’t level up? If he was concerned about briles, I get that but I think he probably didn’t get what he wanted. Just my take.

This is a business not a personal relationship. If a guy that works for you interviews fora different job but doesn’t get it you don’t fire him out of spite, especially if he does a good job and you think he can still be of use to you

Look, I like platitudes as much as the next guy but let's be honest. The college football landscape is a completely different critter than it was when Sam made that statement.
If he was serious about competing in the SEC, he had to take a step back from that statement. Like Bobby D said, "you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone, because the times they are a changing". For better or for worse.

Yep, when that statement was made there was no NIL to offer potential transfers, the portal wasn't such a big free agency free for all, and Sam was still a new coach that hadn't learned how it all works behind the scenes yet. I'm 100% fine with him changing his mind, although I tend to agree with his original thought process. If you don't want to be here enough to potentially change your whole life and enter the portal, then we probably don't want you taking up a scholarship spot or dollars.
But times have changed and entering the portal is like free agency now, players put their names in just to see the offers, promises of playing time, and NIL they'll get. It's a new world and that means coaches have to adjust to work it to their advantage or get left behind.

For one an employee isn’t going to tell his boss unless he has leverage. Obviously Hornsby does not have that. My point.

Hornsby doesn't have leverage on us? Are we sure about that? We don't have anyone with any experience behind him

He doesn't have experience either

Walk-On WR John David White has entered the portal

This is the kind of transfer the portal is made for and should be utilized for mostly, a kid that might see playing time at a smaller program in order to enjoy his last years of playing football before it's all behind him.
I wish him the best of luck, hopefully he lands somewhere he can start and have fun while it lasts.

Yep, undersized, not so fast, white receiver that doesn't do anything well but catch the ball.

Hes taken more snaps against better competition than anyone. The struggle seems to be he hasn't done much if any passing in game which is discouraging.
Posted on 1/14/22 at 6:36 pm to oklahogjr
He is 5/12 passing with 25 rush attempts
I wouldn't call that seasoned. Kids come and go all the time. I'd love to have him but if he wants to leave, I don't think we are losing a ton of experience

thought his OC was gone... And has now found out that his OC is staying...
I think he thought he was maybe going to have lots and lots of suitors begging him to play at a Southern P5 school, but that probably didn't happen. And ones that did have interests may have tried to get him to convert to WR or something.
When there are 1500 players in the portal, a backup qb who has limited tape, no matter how electric of an athlete he is, is going to get lost in the shuffle.

I’ve said since I’ve seen Hornsby run, that he would be a perfect slot guy. Or even a primary receiver. Probably where he would play in the pros with that speed and size. Like Braxton Miller and Pat White.
Posted on 1/14/22 at 7:15 pm to FayetteNAM
Speed doesn’t necessarily translate to route running or catching or being able to high point a ball or being able to get separation from a cornerback
There have been guys who have made the jump but why is there any reason to believe Malik would be a better WR than some random guy off a track team?
