The opt out deal will never be acceptable to me as I fan. I experienced the golden age of college football before we had the crazy coaching salary carousel and players skipping games to keep from possibly getting hurt to make money. It was a far better time than what we are experiencing today. Interestingly, people go nuts when our team can’t put forth its collective best effort because of a key player involuntarily being unable to play in a game but then are 100% okay with a team not being at its best for a key player voluntarily skipping a game. We are starting to see it across the sports spectrum at all levels—players skipping games for a variety of reasons. Things just don’t mean as much to the players and that translates into things not meaning as much/lack of interest on the part of the fans who are part of the equation as well.

It is also just more proof where we are as a society and it is not good. That people, especially the younger ones, accept this, just demonstrates how little honor has a place in today’s world.

As for the meaningless bowl games that people keep referencing, most are becoming that way if they are not there already. I haven’t been to one in some time and may not ever go to another one. We’re 15-24-3 so our bowl record is pretty abysmal anyway.

Can we just all agree this good old days shite is more of a psychological how you feel vs reality?

Maybe it ends up being like the 78 Orange Bowl which we won, amazingly, even though we were missing key players including some who were suspended. LINK

Uh, no? It's pretty obvious it's not just a "feeling" thing. The entire landscape is completely different.

I'm not saying it's the same. I'm saying remembering that time as better than now is just some selective memory stuff. This is pretty true of all the nostalgia stuff with how our memories work.

Not sure I agree with that, either. It's pretty easy to make a case for a time when star players didn't opt out of bowl games vs. a time when it's commonplace.

It sucks but college football used to be better. Reality is what it is. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it all the same, but it has definitely seen better times especially in terms of pageantry, fan support, and player loyalty.

absolutely, it has become corporate, sanitized, and nothing but a new business model.

It will turn into a pro minor league. Fans will continue to lose interest as finances become more of an issue.

More teams who want to win will do like A&M in recruiting and invest big money into LLC to funnel money to the elite 5* players.

No. shite now is way more corporate than it used to be and I don't think aTm or Missouri made the conference better and really don't want Texas or OU

I remember when bowls that were named after corporate sponsors were a laughing stock

The Aggies were a money grab. Missouri wanted the Big 10 but were declined. The only reason the SEC wanted Missouri was to balance the divisions.

I wanted Oklahoma and Texas because it would help balance the political structure from the Bama schools just a little. It helps with regional rivalries that Arkansas desperately needed for 30 years. Also Arkansas has better chances of beating Oklahoma and Texas than the Bama schools each year.

I don't know that I'd pluralize the Bama schools.

We're not going to beat Saban while he's in Tuscaloosa, but we have no business getting owned by Auburn.

We're 11-18-1 against them since joining the SEC. We were dead even in record with them until we decided to take the last decade off and went 1-8 in our last 9.

If he stays long enough then it will happen. The bear was smart enough to hang it up as he knew that he was going in a decline. Saban is due for a lean year just like the bear had.

I keep thinking that as well but it never happens. They lost a crazy amount of super talented guys last year yet they are still in the playoff. Speaking of which, how spoiled are Bama fans. Hearing them talk this year you would think they went 5-7.

They wanted Missouri for the TV market. All decisions are about money.
