Yeah but it's rare that a guy will toss his job for it now. Although I guess you're right. If anyone would do it, it's Mike.

Would be the greatest moment in Razorback history.
I had him mentioned in a troll thread I ended up backing out of and even in that troll thread I took him out because it seemed too stupid. If we land Brad Stevens I'll get a tattoo of his face on my arse.

Tubby Smith did the same thing, several times, easily found a new job each time.

Hatfield left Arkansas for the same reasons, landed at Clemson, then Rice.

Several colleges are happy to get and have a guy who is straight forward about who he is and what his teams are and will do and win. They may not win enough for some of their destinations but there will always be a demand for this type of coach.

Its the guys who bait and switch schools who end back up in the ranks as an assistant in short order, they may get a couple chances on the big stage, but after that even the small schools would rather have an unproven coach over them. (Heath, Pelphrey, Grant, probably add Capel to the list soon).

The "wish" list certainly has it fair share of drawbacks.

Sampson - Age. His age doesn't really match what HY stated in his statement, but if you consider a decade is an eternity in the coach world it probably isn't a big deal.

Marshall - Had made a career of recruiting talented guys who couldn't qualify for power 5 programs. No reason for him to not do this where he has been at, but would be a concern for a P5 school.

Beard - Inexperience, not the same TTU program before Tubby as after, but the same could be said of Arkansas now compared to post Pel.

Billy Donovan - Can frick off after his actions towards Arkansas in the past.

Different people running the show and making the decision compared to football (I called Chad following Bert's firing, here, you can look it up).

Thankfully it isn't the guy who had BCG "in the bag" and "done deal" calling the shots this time around.

The goal is the "splash hire" (like Bert), not the best hire, at this time.

To follow what Trey reported above, I’ve heard Kelvin has had his eye on this one for a while now. Will be very interested to see how it plays out as UH will not let him walk easily. The interest is there from Sampson though.

They've already been rattled off.

The smallest splash would be Musselman who would have to be sold on his two failed stints as a NBA coach forever ago to try to separate himself from being in the same Trent Johnson/Mark Fox mold we've seen fail in the SEC.

Jeff Long isn’t running things anymore. Yurachek isn’t looking to hire a name just for the name. He wants a good basketball coach

How does everyone rank their wishlist? I've got

1. Beard
2. Sampson
3. Marshall
4. Buzz
5. Musselman

I would actually be mildly upset if it ended up being Musselman. I honestly don't think it falls below #2 though. Hunter's not fricking around.

Arkansas basketball has had good coaches in the past.

The were fired or crawled out of the state due to their recruiting.

Arkansas needs a guy who can recruit at a high caliber on a consistent basis.

I don't even consider him an option. Figured Boston was pretty happy with him. Is it not that way?

1, 2, and 4 have been tossed around by boosters who totally aren't involved in HY's decision.

3 and 5 and expressed interest on their own.

Buzz has been wanting back in Texas since he was at Marquette, he started at atm.

Beard is either at his dream job or waiting for his dream job to open (Texas) depending on who you believe.

Would either one bolt to Texas if given the chance?

Marshall's dream job is a bust after being passed over, although it could be open again in time for him to find a fresh start.

Musselman is working harder on finding a new job than replacing the roster he's losing it seems.

Seems to be a problem that the majority of the players from the glory days from Arkansas failed to get their degrees to be able to be HC or failed when given the opportunity as a HC on the mid-major level. It'd be much easier to be like Duke or UNC with former players and assistant coaches all over the country who would give up everything to have that HC job...

Just don't see Beard as a possibility at all with all the ties to Texas.

He's making plenty at Tech, they'd probably match what we'd be willing to pay and its safer to sit and hold out for the Texas job that way.

As Dale said, it's a shame we don't have a hot up and coming alumn in the coaching ranks but it is what it is.

I'm really trying to get Beard out of my mind as even a remote possibility.

Not sure why. There's interest being reported on both sides. If he can wait at Tech for Texas to open up, he can do it here too. Might get lucky and have him realize we're a better job.

Family is in Texas apparently?

Just saying, if they'll match say 4 million, do you see him leaving?

I don't think we'd offer him 5 and does anyone think he's worth that at this point? Maybe if he made the final 4 but that would be a shock move.

Obviously I'd be down, just want to temper expectations and trust HY is ready for a few different scenarios.
