Burton is going to fit Metchie's trustworthy, route runner, security blanket role like a glove

From Tim Watts on Burton

quote:

There is other way to say this other than landing Jermaine Burton is huge. From a talent standpoint, Burton is one of the best in the SEC. He was UGA's leading wide receiver (not counting Bowers the TE) and averaged almost 20 yards per catch. UGA wanted him to stay but he was set on leaving. I don't know the reasons why but he discussed leaving for a while before actually entering the portal. But talented he is and for UA at a need position with the Tide losing their three most productive wideouts to the NFL. He will have a chance to step in right away and compete. He's planning to enroll now so him participating in spring will also be ideal with him getting a chance to connect with Bryce Young on the field.

Speaking of Bryce, he's the gift that keeps on giving and again played a role in landing Burton. We said back when UA landed Young that the benefits of landing him would be seen down the road and I think that has definitely been the case. He played a big role in landing Jameson Williams also. Receivers want to play with a guy like Bryce and he's easy to talk to, with the other prospects trusting him. He's quite the leader.

Huge pick up. Hopefully Brooks, Hall and Earle continue to progress.

Speculation is he rather play with a different QB (Young could help look better). Also Bama throws the ball a lot more and doesn’t typically rotate a bunch of receivers like Georgia does. He caught 26-27 passes each of the last 2 years.

Thanks. Yeah, looking at their WR stats now, I see what you mean.

I think he's faster than Metchie, but as far as being a guy you can rely on to catch the ball when it hits his hands he's about as good as it gets. And we need someone like that. Hopefully he's able to step in and establish himself as the leader of the WR room. Those young guys need someone to show them how it's done Sunday-Friday.

Yep - and he's a great contested ball guy. Just a huge pickup that fits a need like a frickin glove. The fact that he can take pressure off the other, young receivers is great. Between him and Gibbs/Jase out of the backfield plus Latu.......Brooks/Hall/Earle/etc aren't going to be under constant pressure to keep drives moving.

And it's crazy how he is the perfect fit for this coming season (reliable, technician, efficient) whereas Jameson was the perfect fit for last season (explosive, stretch field). Saban is just a fvckin assasin.

No one has ever come close to Saban's roster construction skill in the scholarship limits era. It's one of those things people don't really think about, but makes a huge difference. We always have skill position guys who complement each other well. Or rather, we go into the season with them and then they get hurt.

Which is wild considering roster construction in college is completely voluntary by the student athlete, especially now.

You don't get to draft 10 guys a year. You have to both identify AND convince the right guys to come play for you.

I said the same thing about him being faster than Metchie and got blasted for it. Strange.

Burton will play the X spot very well... I think he'll do some things that Metchie can't do and that's not a knock on John Metchie.

What would make it perfect if we can pull a OT, TE and another WR... Man, we would be "loaded" I know players that are considering transferring to Alabama, probably realize the spot is getting full... If you're a elite player and you are wanting to transfer, now is the time. I have a feeling that after March/April... we're done.

Burton has a skill set that is more reminiscent of Amari Cooper and Ridley than Metchie. He can be used a possession WR and he can take the top off of a defense. The guy is much more proven than Jameson Williams coming to Tuscaloosa. Huge get!

Recruiting HS players has always been a gamble in not knowing who will pan out and how long it will take for someone to develop. Saban is now using the portal to address those misses and fill the gaps.

The transfer portal is a different animal now for what colleges can do with it and as long as Saban is at the helm UA will control the free agent market it it has created.

I haven't kept up, why is Burton transferring?

Business decision based on style and draft stock.

UGA is obviously successful in what they do on offense, but the scheme is run-first, play action, and spread it around to lots of targets. UGA has had one 1,000 WR, EVER (not even AJ Green did it). Alabama had 2 this season alone in both Jamo and Metchie.

Over the past 10 years, UGA has 0 WRs picked in the first round of the NFL draft, and only 1 go in the 2nd round (Mecole Hardman).

Alabama has had 6 first rounders over that span (Cooper, Ridley, Ruggs, Jeudy, Waddle, Smitty), with a great chance to add 1 or 2 more this year with Jamo and Metchie.
