A lot of his career coincided with the pre-at large bid era,

not to mention the tourney byes which is weird

I hate college football playoff having byes. everyone should play the same amount of games.

Nobody has recruited like Oats has. The number of skilled players that he has accumulated every year tailored specifically to his playing style is unprecedented at Bama.
Don’t think this will stop as long as he is coaching here.

you either won your conference tournament or didn't get in
. During CM’s time, there was no conference tournament, and only one team could per conference could be in it. We actually won or tied for 1st in 1974, 75, and 76. The NCAA did not expand to 64 teams until the 1980’s.

They'll get rid of the byes during the next contact negotiations. Too much money in having a home playoff game. But they weren't going to go from 4 to 16. 12 was already a surprisingly big increase. But we've all seen that money talks.

Is Oats the greatest basketball coach in Bama’s history?

I'd say second. But another SEC title/S16 or better and he's the man.

My 63 year old dad who adores Wimp says yes. In my mind, this is the only time in our program’s history where we had a Top 5 coach

Definitely agree. I grew up on Wimp and watched us really become the most consistent program in the SEC during his time. I would put Wimp in the Frank Beamer category. Great coach, good eye for talent, always coached well. Elite, no... But, just a rock solid program where it isn't easy to win. My only beef with Wimp is I think he always kind of accepted that Alabama was a football school and in some ways I think he kind of embraced it because it reduced the pressure. Nate on the other hand seems to have really forced even the most die hard fog into the conversation of "Ok, you have our attention"

Also have heard Wimp on many occasions say he did not like playing a tough non conference schedule and preferred to play "bad teams with good jerseys" in the pre conference slate. I think that had a tendency to backfire on him in the NCAA tournament when they ran into blue bloods in close games. His teams would beat quality teams if they could jump on you and choke you out, but in back and forth games where it got really tight I always felt like his teams weren't battle tested for those moments.

They’ll be really high level at the 2, 3, and 5. They’ll be hurting big time if Pegues ever finds himself in foul trouble or has some sort of injury though.

In many ways, Wimp was a great coach. But that is one place where I think it Bit him. He never got his teams ready to start SEC competition. If you look back Over his record, you will be hard put to find a year where we won the SEC opener.

I want Auburn to be good. It makes it so much sweeter when we beat their arse.

Yes. He has our only Final Four and it doesn't appear to be a flash in the pan.

Stay here for at least 5-7 more years and win a few more trophies? I really don't know what else he could do to convince anyone who isn't already convinced.

I wasn’t old enough to see Wimp’s team in action, so hard for me to judge. I’m in the camp that Oats is the best coach based on accomplishments in his tenure, but is probably still 1B (or possibly 1C) at this point at Bama just due to longevity. He’s clearly on the path to be the best, and may just need a year or two more.

Another final four and he is clearly the best. Even another elite 8 appearance would vault him to #1 IMO, given he’d have a 2-0 advantage in E8s over CM and Wimp. Without either of those, I think he’d need a couple S16s and/or SEC titles to be the clear #1. He’s going to get there, though, and I hope to be there to see it happen!

It pretty much has to be a Sears or Jarin hint

At least 10-15 times. I rewatch Latrell’s season highlights at least once a week. Also enjoy watching the way Sears and Nelson lead the team through tournament. That team will forever go down as one of the more destined teams in program history.

Here's from a reddit thread of top 5 most hated programs. It was pretty much the top 5 winningest programs or listing Duke 5 times. But this was from some North Carolina fans.

So yeah, Oats is making blue bloods hate us like that. We've never had a coach dominate a legit elite basketball program because we're kicking their asses on and off the court. Nobody else has accomplished that.

I also think it's funny how it went from civility after beating them in that shitty JQ/Love 4OT 3 point contest, to them straight up hating our asses.

That is really funny, especially the part about why they hate Bama. The 2nd most laughable part is you can cryptically read into the fact that the UK fan is offended that Bama is on the list and they are not.
