ok, well lets say saban hangs it up in the next 5 years.

who out there is better than dabo, that would leave where they are for bama. because, despite of the run bama is on, there are coaches out there that will not leave their current situation for bama or any program.

Dabo is an excellent recruiter. He always has been. As an X's and O's guy, he's average. As a motivator, he sucks. He has a "Syracuse whipped our arse" game every year, in a cakewalk conference. From a PR standpoint, his schtick and self importance are really wearing thin. Hard pass. Going after an Alabama man is what had us wandering in the wilderness for the the 80's. He loves Alabama and I respect what he's done and he's a good coach...for Clemson. He'd be a bad fit in Tuscaloosa.

I don't think it's a case of "going after an Alabama man" at all. He's generally considered one of the top two or three coaches in America.

He may not seem a fit to you, but I dare you to throw out an alternative and see how the comparison goes down.

I was concerned when Dabo started winning that our fans would be locked in on him as Saban's successor and I am absolutely relieved that everyone wants him as far away from our program as I do.

Of course this is all a major hypothetical. Saban doesn't seem close to finished yet. Saban might even coach longer than Dabo. You never know. Dabo might suck in 5 years.

If we're talking about tomorrow, then tbh Dabo probably would be the best we could get. I suppose at the end of the day, winning is all that matters.

I’m not advocating for him necessarily. I would want to see the other candidates but if our options were Rich Rid, Kiffin and Dabo and that’s the only three willing to follow Saban, give me Dabo.

To take this a slightly different direction, instead of going after Dabo or having the athletic director do a coaching search, does anyone believe that Coach Saban is willing to hire and groom a young successor, an up and coming talented coordinator almost ready for an HC job, in Saban's final years?

I firmly believe that he's already tried this.

But the thing about him being the chief signatory on the next hire just won't happen. He will respect the AD & President's wishes, with a confidential recommendation

I'm not insinuating he would strong arm anyone. If the AD at the time wants to do an independent search with or without a rec I'm sure that is no skin off of Saban's nose. I don't think Riley and Day were pre-approved by the ADs at OU and OSU. I am saying Saban brings him in and gives all the knowledge his is willing to and then when he decides to retire go hey AD, I brought him in cause I think he is the guy and I gave him what I know. He has my rec but do what you think is best.

Out of curiosity who do you think he has tried this with?

To be honest when Steve turned down the barn job I felt he would replace Saban in about 2yrs if we repeated this yr.Only because he would have Bryce for the next two yrs.
I was thinking Only a Texas, Mich or USC return offer would pull him and then Texas pulled the trigger.

Steve seems reasonable for that although I feel the way he jumped for the Falcons coordinator job the first time that would have raised some skepticism with him. Who knows he might end up back here . With some of the stuff he is dealing with at Texas already in just this short time, my gut tells me it is not going to end well.

ETA: I also agree RCT, I don't think Saban is close to retiring and Sark would have been too established now that I think about it.

If you want to have a coach in waiting, you have to give him a date or at least a range. Saban isn't at that point yet.

I still don't understand why he took that job. Texas has become a caricature of itself at this point and will never get out of its own way. I mean yeah they're rich as frick and all that, but so are the Kardashians. It doesn't stop either of them from being an absurd reality show though.

Interesting list, I really like Campbell. Campbell and Grinch are both Ohio guys and played at Mount Union together. You never know but I think they are both going to try to wait it out for big time jobs in the Midwest. I would be surprised if either ever coaches in the SEC. Rhule is kind of like Saban where it seems like he will go wherever he thinks will give the best chance of winning. Having a New Yorker as the Bama head coach would be something.

Going after Swinney would be something Bill Battle would do b/c it's obvious move. Greg Byrne will work his ninja magic and land us a Midwest boy that can actually coach.

What the hell would Mal Moore do?

Mal Moore would go and get a guy who's actually won a fricking national championship. Maybe even two.

I'll take that any day over your "Midwest boy."

How important is talent in this sport?

Dabo would keep the talent level about where it is right now.

I'm not so sure if Dabo can sustain this talent level although to be fair no one could. He has just started bringing in top 5 classes the last 2 years, historically his classes have been more 10-20 range with an occasional top 10. (I am ignoring the fact that recruiting rankings aren't the end all and be all).

Also he has policies like no transfers in, generally he doesn't have summer official visits, only makes committable offers and doesn't allow visits once committed. I'm not saying that is bad but would it work at Bama and if not would he be willing to adjust. Dabo is really an interesting case as a coach/recruiter.

Saban was a once a lifetime thing that doesn't come often. Even Moore didn't think he was going to land him.
